The reader is led through a discussion of the communication eras ultimately to understand the secondarily oral society thriving in Appalachia today.  oral stories are recorded, transcribed, and edited for sermonic use in story sermons.  The results revealed the significant benefit to be gained through the use of story sermons within congregational settings. Appalachia's earliest settlers bring with them a Scotch-Irish culture and historic anti-Anglican biases. Tennessee's first two bishops promote a High Church understanding of ecclesiology. These two distinct and often diametrically opposed cultural and religious forms remain at odds even into the late twentieth century. The project conducts interviews with 15 pastors in two focus groups and distributes a questionnaire completed by 426 laypersons. If a cultural gap is part of the problem, measures can be taken to help pastors develop greater cultural sensitivity. Surveys investigated differences between perceptions of pastors and members in an Appalachian conference of Seventh-Day Adventists.  Percentages, t-tests for independent means, and correlation coefficients examined the relationship between perceptions regarding Appalachian culture of church members and pastors at the .05 significance level.  All, but one, of the cultural clusters indicates cultural gaps. The experiment represented an attempt to move a mainline local church toward a more activist mission orientation in relation to its social and economic context. It explores the thesis that pastoral leadership which aims at engaging church leaders in theological reflection about their identity and context will lead to an experience of revitalization.  The experiment in interpretive guidance failed to achieve significant change in the mission orientation of this church toward its community. The project includes a literature review, descriptors of the Appalachian and postmodern mindsets arising from that review, a survey based on those descriptors, survey results and conclusions.  The survey was distributed in a two-church United Methodist Charge in central Pennsylvania.
