It showed that Appreciative Inquiry can be an effective means for crossing sub-group boundaries and intercultural barriers. People from around the world with different customs, values, and beliefs are now living in close proximity to each other. To effectively engage in ministry in such a multicultural context will require leaders to intentionally develop competencies for their intercultural journey. This research project examined how ten three-hour sessions of training delivered over a 16-week period impacted the intercultural competency of eighteen Christian leaders from diverse cultural backgrounds. Three conceptual models that were foundational in designing this training: Bennett's 'Developmental Model of Intercultural Sensitivity' (Bennett 1998), Deardorff's 'Process Model of Intercultural Competence' (Deardorff 2006), and Berry's 'Model of Acculturation' (Berry 2005). Both the IDI assessment and participant feedback suggested a significant development of intercultural competency of the members of the study group, indicating that a training intervention such as this could increase a leader's motivation, cultural self-awareness, knowledge and skills enabling them to navigate the complexities of intercultural ministry. This study found 113 churches had been planted.  Surprisingly, only ten (9%) closed, another five had fewer than twenty in average attendance, yielding a failure rate (13%) far lower than expected (65-75%). Churches targeting ethnic/linguistic groups were most numerous and likely to succeed. Biblical and theological foundations are explored, especially a Christian understanding of failure and success. It proposes to find out what is the influence of postmodern thought on the respondents of the questionnaire and what are the implications for pastoral ministry.   The research discloses the influence of postmodern thought upon the 109 participants of the survey project. The first chapter is about some current problems in ministry. The second chapter discusses four basic theological principles relevant to the investigation. The third chapter reviews available literature pertinent to the research. The writer will use the Bible as the foundation and actual interviews with experienced churches in finding mistakes and pitfalls to avoid. This is in the hopes that churches can develop Mandarin ministries according to God's will in the future so as to expand God's
