What begins as a major mission to reach the pre-Christian in a particular community will at some point begin to shift in focus. What was once directed outward has now turned inward. This process happens so gradually that the shift is not perceived by church leaders. If this inward-looking phase is allowed to continue, at some point disintegration will begin to take place. Some type of intervention needs to take place for a course correction. There needs to be a re-introduction of evangelism into the life and mission of the congregation. This project is an attempt to develop a strategy for effective disciple-making and leadership development in a college town church that has a very high turnover rate and a big potential to reach out to scholars from China. In a six month period ideas of the proposed approach were communicated to three groups of participants in multiple sessions of the groups' regular meetings to test the new model's effectiveness. Two projects of home repair were secured with 33 people participating and 19 serving as a comparison group. Both groups received identical training and completed a Likert scale pretest and posttest questionaire. Using Dr. Eldin Villafañe's 'Hermeneutical Circle,' this document starts with a clarification of the problem, mining information from observations, experience and written materials. This research attempts to identify principles of witness with Muslims and some possible starting points for developing a Christian theology addressed to the Muslim's frame of understanding. Evangelical communities have become fragmented due to a number of destructive behaviors. The result is that a convergence of powerful stresses in directly harming the Brazilian community. Despite the diversity of beliefs and practices, many Brazilian immigrants have been sustained in the displacement and adaptation to American society by regular church attendance.  However, many have burned out. There is a dearth of research addressing addiction and spiritual abuse among members of Brazilian Christian Churches.  The goal of this thesis is to explore and clearly identify how this spiritual abuse has occurred, what its impacts on the community are and to suggest some approaches to heal the victims. First, the paper examines some of the root causes of dysfunction in Brazilian churches. Second, a review of pertinent literature on understanding Brazilians and their faith is presented. Third, systems thinking is used to determine the current level of dysfunction and abuse in order to identify strategies for healing. These factors include: spiritual preparation, leadership buy-in, the on-going communication of vision and philosophy, a healthy launch, congregational buy-in and successfully passing on the philosophical DNA of making disciples. The on-going communication of vision and philosophy was determined to be the most critical factor in this change process. This study also relates these factors to John Kotter's eight-stage process of change from his book Leading change (1996).
