These chaplains are sustained and enabled by a strong sense of God's providence and by a clear vision of 'calling' understood through a rather literal application of the Ordinal of the Episcopal Church. The project discusses worship among nineteenth-century Episcopalians and the church's place in the antebellum South. Following an analytical framework suggested by Loren B Mead in The Once and Future Church, the case study confronts and analyzes issues of money, power, paternalism, organization, administration, and the role of judicatories in global church linkages.
