The benefits of combining pastoral care, sermon preparation, and preaching in a retreat setting to several married couples are explored. Designed to help couples develop healthy relationship skills and competencies, the sermons provide biblical references, theological information, and practical tools of pastoral counselors. I show through contextual practice how couples learn skills and receive tools to assist them with cultivating a healthy marriage. Prior interventions for burnout have been focused on the staff nurse level. This is very important work, but without also addressing the needs of leaders, it is unlikely to be successful. Studies have shown that one of the predictors of nurse turnover is poor leadership. This project addressed the needs of the nurse managers, with the hypothesis that improved leadership will lead to improved burnout status of the staff nurses. Training was provided in Spiritual Leadership Theory which prioritizes the utilization of spiritual practices and concepts to empower and develop leaders. This training, daily spiritual practices, and participation in bi-monthly spiritual direction/companionship meetings over three months comprised the intervention. Burnout, job satisfaction and spiritual well-being were measured pre and post intervention.  Because of the small participant size, no quantitative statistically significant results were able to be noted; although, continued study with additional participants is planned to gather further quantitative data. Girrell"],"subject_tesim":["Interpersonal relations","Church committees","Organizational change","Church management","Leadership--Religious aspects"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["No Longer Servants, but Friends: Toward a Relational Approach to Spiritual Leadership Development is a participatory action research project in which the pastor-researcher and the leadership development team (LDT) of a small United Methodist congregation worked collaboratively to shift the team’s mindset and methods from nominations to leadership development. Using a shared leadership model and tools of appreciative inquiry, the pastor-researcher encouraged the LDT to identify gaps in the church’s leadership system and brainstorm and implement possible solutions. The intervention took place during the 2019-2020 program year and was, therefore, affected by the unanticipated challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic and the pastor-researcher’s move to a different church. This allowed the pastor-researcher to observe the LDT’s shift in mindset and methods under the pressure of these circumstances.The pastor-researcher observed the LDT’s process and outcomes and evaluated the members’ self-reported experiences via questionnaire, group interviews, and meeting transcripts. The key findings of the study illustrated that the LDT members experienced their process favorably, especially as evidenced by adopting the collaborative and systemic approaches they experienced in the intervention and applying these approaches to their work with other church leaders. Additionally, the study found that LDT members reported reduced anxiousness in their tasks, increased confidence in their effectiveness, and strong commitment to their shift in mindset, even in the face of the unanticipated crises. Most LDT members attributed these positive experiences to aspects of the intervention, including shared purpose, understanding of the church leadership system, collaborative leadership, and relationship with the pastor-researcher. The purpose of it was to test to what extent interculturality is vital and essential to the Dehonian charism, and how it can be effectively implemented within Priests of the Sacred Heart initial formation in the United States. Because this project deals with experience, culture, and tradition, the author has decided to employ the method of practical theology of James and Evelyn Whitehead.  The Whiteheads’ method encourages reflection upon these three elements of life, experience, culture, and tradition, and brings them into correlation to the moment of implementation. The result of this profound reflection and discernment emerges in a pastoral response. Chapter one presents the ministry context and the goals of this project. Chapter two provides an exegesis of four passages of Scripture (Matthew 5:13-16; Acts 17:26,27; 1 Corinthians 9:19-23; Ephesians 2:1-10) to show God’s plan for humanity to walk in a relationship with him. The chapter also explains that God empowers believers by his grace to serve him and calls believers to be a witness for him in both word and action. Chapter three identifies four of the most formal evangelism methods and explains how relational ways of reaching out are a seamless transition from evangelism to discipleship. Chapter four describes the project itself, describing the details of the preparation and implementation of the project. Chapter five evaluates the purpose and goals of the project. This chapter also addresses the strengths and weaknesses of the project. Mark"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["Over the past two decades, there have been many studies conducted on the large number of teenagers leaving the local church after high school. Youth ministry leaders must re-evaluate their approach and disciple-making strategy in their local church if they want to create lifelong followers of Jesus.In a recent study on church dropouts, Lifeway Research showed 66% of students stopped attending church after graduation. To further explore the findings from the 2017 Lifeway study, this ministry project examines the impact of intense biblical teaching and mentoring relationships within the context of covenant-group discipleship and its overall influence on church attendance of 116 high school seniors after graduation. The project director believed that students would demonstrate a minimum of a 15% decrease in the church dropout rate when compared to nationwide high school graduates who did not participate in an intentional covenant-group discipleship group.Chapter 1 introduces the framework and need for this ministry project. The first chapter communicates the research methodology, purpose, and goals as well.Chapter 2 of the ministry project presents biblical and theological support for disciple-making in the context of covenant-group discipleship. This ministry project purposed to demonstrate that covenant-group discipleship is firmly grounded in God’s Word and therefore a viable solution to create lifelong disciples of Christ in youth ministry.In Chapter 3 of this project, the project director examines the current state of youth ministry, an overview of the Gen Z generation, and multiple studies indicating what may impact the current dropout rate of students from the local church. Finally, the project director explores the discipleship models of historical and contemporary figures.Chapter 4 explores the findings from this ministry project in detail. The findings from this ministry project overwhelmingly support the project director’s initial proposition of church retention after graduation.Chapter 5 evaluates the many elements and facets of the ministry project. The ministry project’s purpose, its corresponding goals, as well as its strengths and weaknesses are assessed. Aquinas Institute of Theology, Saint Louis, Missouri, 2021. Sexual Abuse is neither new nor limited to the current century. Interest in the efficacy of preaching about sexual abuse to enlighten congregational listeners and to convey the healing message of the Gospel has evolved alongside church educational programs designed to prevent sexual abuse in churches.This thesis project helped a small group of preachers learn to preach about sexual abuse to their own congregations. It asks what the effects on listeners are when they hear such sermons and on preachers when they preach them. Chapter One provides background for preaching about sexual abuse, describes the reasons for the project, and discusses published resources that advocate for such preaching. The chapter concludes that such preaching is appropriate.Chapter Two integrates the scriptural, theological, and homiletical foundations of preaching. Both the healing texts of the Gospels, and some of the dark texts of sexual abuse and sexual violence are considered.Chapter Three considers sexual abuse in its the social and cultural environment. It helps preachers understand what is going on in the world outside the church so they can bridge from there to the world of the Gospel. It also describes ways in which churches and clergy have used scripture to harm victims of sexual abuse. Chapter Four describes the ministerial intervention by four preachers. It describes how the preachers were selected, how surveys for the preachers and their listeners were constructed and used, and the formation of congregation focus groups. Brief demographic data of the congregations involved and of the cities in which they were located was provided.Chapter Five describes the findings from the surveys, workshops, and focus groups, and interprets them in the context of the thesis project.
