Lesbian, gay, and bisexual persons have been placed into the role of the bearer of sexual shame and have been the object of projection, discrimination, and prejudice. Through the use of structural family therapy, combined with concepts from various family systems theories and object relations theory, homophobia in the church is analyzed. This analysis leads to a theology and psychology of liberation, empowering lesbian/gay/bisexual and heterosexual persons to change the structures of homophobia into structures of liberation. Through 15 in-depth interviews this project relates the experiences of persons in a liberation worshipping community in New Hampshire. The underpinnings of this thesis are demonstrated through an examination of the Roman Catholic understanding of the Bible, tradition, current magisterial statements and broader theological reflection and experience in relation to homosexuality. The role of conscience and dissent in the history of the Catholic Church are discussed as central dynamics in coming to a stance of self-affirmation. It is argued from the perspective of conscience/dissent that self-affirmation as gay Catholic Christians is a theologically valid (if minority) position. Clinically, within a context of gay-affirmative psychotherapy it is demonstrated that an application of conscience/dissent to the magisterial teaching of the Church can be a fruitful way of helping a gay Catholic client individuate and achieve greater freedom to live deeply both humanly and spiritually."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["63ab0f5c-c5fb-460c-b8ba-dd2fd91f7145"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791133909712371712,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:26:46.937Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T02:08:55Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:29:35Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"d70b7da2-ddd9-42a4-b35b-bdd13ed7d7d9","accessControl_ssim":["9a12ead1-c69e-497f-89d8-c77216af6029"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["The way of the shaman: a way for ministry"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T02:08:54Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:16:45Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["68f1ae7a-a920-445c-be5d-7a08eb9f92b0"],"hasLease_ssim":["7fd61ee7-8479-414b-a130-73e41521843b"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"advisor_tesim":["Paul Huss"],"year_tesim":["1992"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Robert E Whitfield"],"publisher_tesim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"subject_tesim":["Clergy--Office","Shamanism","Homosexuality","Lord's Supper"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This project, an integrated reflection, proposes that a shaman, defined (by Joseph Campbell) as one who has personally encountered the Holy, is better equipped than a priest, defined as one who has received a tradition second-hand, to communicate the Christian myth to a secular society.
