To aid in this there is theological reflection, the ability to explore one's responses made to God.  A three tiered plan was implemented to examine this: reflection groups were established in four ecclesiastically diverse congregations; each was nurtured in a theological reflective process for four to five weeks; and members were encouraged to further develop and use theological reflection skills. Through a written survey and in-depth interviews, mangers' personal and professional experiences, attitudes, and theological beliefs were explored.  The project concludes that for numerous historical and cultural reasons, managers separate their faith from their work.  Local churches tend to reinforce that separation. Unacknowledged grief and lack of support can result. Working within a Free Church polity, it then suggests there is much the church can to do connect its pastors to the lines of support, authorization and accountability they need for healthier ministry. Its six chapters offer:  1. an introduction on the need to think in expanded terms about our connections; 2. a definition and description of pastoral isolation; 3. a history of the principle of autonomy and its misunderstanding; 4. an analysis of individualism and social virtue, and the personal and communal power needed to balance them; 5. a covenantal ecclesiology upon which to base its recommendations; and 6. a church-wide plan to provide the connecting elements required, the hallmark of which is a thorough recasting of the role and structure of UCC Associations. It proposes a plan for men's ministry in the UCC informed by Scripture, theology, narrative theory, and work of the social sciences related to gender issues. The intended audience includes ministers and laity presently involved in or hoping to be involved in a visitation ministry with those who are dying.  The method used was a twelve-hour training program.
