The purpose of this dissertation is to record the degree of effectiveness which word pictures, embedded in inductively formatted sermons, had in the adult Sunday school classes of the Whiteville United Methodist Church.  The thesis of this study is that when a minister utilizes inductive sermon designs in his or her adult Sunday school classes, the majority of all responses will be positive. The end result will be a desire by both the speaker and hearers to make further use of these distinctive inductive formats.  The instrument used as a measuring device is the Boyd Stokes Questionnaire. This form was administered after each sermon was preached, and an overall average response factor was determined from the resultant data. Local churches should be more intentional and effective in their approach to baptismal instruction.  This project involved the development of a program of baptismal instruction, including the development of a baptismal policy by the local church session, the preparation of printed materials and a seminar for parents as well as a sermon series on baptism for the congregation.  The major conclusion reached is that the model of a group seminar can be effective as a teaching device as well as a tool for assimilating people into the congregation. The 'reason' chapter is drawn from the author's ministerial experience in the Caribbean and highlights some Jamaican theologies of fasting from Christian and quasi-Christian practitioners.  The 'experience' chapter outlines a seven-week group fasting experience led by the student.  The group was pre- and post-tested. Three disciplines, Christian education, church growth, and organizational development are used to inform reflection on the project.  The conclusion of the reflection is that if the Sunday School is to be a vital Christian organization, it must more closely approximate the Anglican Volunteer Religious Societies from which it began.
