Balancing the complex nature of the church, relationships, family life, spiritual and personal life provides the minister with a struggle that rarely ceases. Pursuing self-care within this environment can provide relief to the struggle but is difficult to do alone. The study seeks to provide a model for local church leadership to support their minister so he or she can successfully manage ministry and personal life through self-care practices. The project identified ministers employed in Stone-Campbell churches with a weekly attendance of less than 125 in Minnesota and Wisconsin. A survey was sent to these ministers asking what types of support they receive from their congregation and leadership. The results of the survey identified five ministers who received the highest support. These five ministers were interviewed to determine the relationship between the church leadership support and their self care practices. The biblical and theological review examined the imago Dei's relationship with the elements of self-care with a priority towards spiritual formation. The literature review identified six strategies for successful self-care practice. The interviews identified three relationships that influence the practice of a minister's self-care. In response, the researcher interviewed sixteen congregants and six pastors from churches in the Washington, DC area about how they conceptualize and engage with pastoral authority. The researcher analyzed the interviews using a modified grounded theory approach. Analysis suggested congregants have an overreliance on a pastor's personal authority and an underdeveloped conception of a pastor's role authority. It includes an exegetical analysis and comparison of a first and second generation leader in Scripture.  The three primary areas of research are challenges in leadership development, ministry crisis and burnout, and pre-conversion adverse experiences. The research included surveys and interviews of people in these churches. The findings revealed the behaviors that build trust in these churches are: character, consistency, caring, communication and competency. The results also indicated that behaviors that decrease trust in these churches are: breaking promises, pride, lack of respect, lack of communication and incompetency. The sample consisted of 235 pastors, 187 spouses, and 167 churches from three Presbyterian denominations: EPC, PCA, and PCUSA.  Churches, pastors, and spouses constitute statistically distinct groups in their perceptions of the churches' ministry toward the pastor and family.  Churches judge their performance best, then pastors, and least impressed are spouses.  Pastors and spouses desire to be ministered to by the church more holistically than the churches desire.  The greatest areas of disappointment by pastors and spouses are not in ministering to the professional role of the pastor, but to the pastor as a person.  Correlations were found between the perception of emotional support and financial support. Research was conducted by means of a detailed questionnaire mailed to 114 ministers-at-large; a briefer questionnaire was sent to church contact persons and denominational regional staff. Corporate leadership is discussed from Biblical, historical, and theological perspectives.  A broad theory is developed suggesting several consequences of team leadership that ultimately affect church growth.  Questionnaire responses assessing team relationship and church growth are correlated by computer analysis. Examination of some growing churches reveals pastor and leaders sharing significant time together.
