Qualitative research conducted with eight officers reveals three common life experiences--emotionally rejecting parents, low self-esteem, and restricted affect--that issue in three common coping responses: attachment to television heroes, marriage, and careers in law enforcement. Accompanying experiences, feelings, and reactions are described and related to the general literature and theory of grief.  Previous research, interviews, and life experiences, affirm that bereaved men have been expected to 'be strong' and to be concerned for others more than themselves. Their styles of griefwork indicate that they prefer to act rather than to talk or express feelings.
