Qualitative research conducted with eight officers reveals three common life experiences--emotionally rejecting parents, low self-esteem, and restricted affect--that issue in three common coping responses: attachment to television heroes, marriage, and careers in law enforcement. Employing conversational, semistructured interviews and a demographic questionnaire, the project finds two primary sources of stress: feelings of powerlessness in the appointment process and economic entrapment in the wife's career. The project conducts interviews with 15 pastors in two focus groups and distributes a questionnaire completed by 426 laypersons. Using the structure and language of Erik H Erikson's psychosocial development model, the object relations insights of John McDargh, and the structural self-development theory of Robert Kegan, a group of six adults engages in an eight-week Bible study to explore ways in which selected biblical narratives interact with the dynamics of developmental psychology. Women clergy are more likely to address the issue because of specialized training in graduate courses, conferences, workshops, or seminars on domestic violence. Participants in 12-step programs register a score significantly higher statistically on representations of God as Loving than do those in Rational Recovery. Participants in Rational Recovery and other nonspiritual groups tend to score significantly higher on representations of God as Wrathful.
