Culture can pose a stumbling block insofar as it directs how we communicate, think, behave, and perceive things. The first generation Korean pastors experience racial and cultural collisions when they serve cross-racial/cross-cultural appointments. With adequate preparation, however, cross-racially/cross-culturally appointed clergy to this service can provide the bridge between two cultures. They can mediate between the cultures. But this change is possible only when we intentionally seek to understand ourselves as racial and cultural beings and to increase cross-cultural competency through educational and training experiences."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Claremont School of Theology"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["e7e2d3cb-fc51-4ba5-a7fd-d43f3f8c150b"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791131928795021312,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:55:17.787Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:34:55Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:54:48Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"60801aef-4fcd-499d-939b-60a4fd83c633","accessControl_ssim":["504bc075-e509-412c-ae7b-fe3061a77af6"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["'This lone brightness': Frances Hubbard Flaherty and the true dharma eye"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:34:53Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T00:57:40Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["b603307d-ba00-4933-82a0-285a0f217983"],"hasLease_ssim":["b35ac34f-6ab0-4174-b519-264f3ac5ac68"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Claremont School of Theology"],"advisor_tesim":["Jack Coogan"],"year_tesim":["2006"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Michael S Bever"],"keyword_tesim":["Films--Religious aspects"],"publisher_tesim":["Claremont School of Theology"],"subject_tesim":["Flaherty, Frances Hubbard","Zen Buddhism"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The collective films of Robert and Frances Flaherty present a vision which has not been explicitly claimed by any religious tradition. The Korean immigrants have experienced great growth since they first came to Hawaii in 1903. The Korean church in America has also undergone tremendous growth. First of all, this study presents the history of Korean immigration to the United States and the accompanying growth of the church in various stages from 1903 to the present. In addition, the study analyzes the results of a survey on what kind of leadership Korean American church congregation members desire. Many of Korean American church congregation members want the servant leadership model for their pastors because they have difficulty adapting to their new life in America. They suffer physical and mental stresses and depression arising from life as a minority group in a foreign land. Therefore, the study examines the meaning of servanthood in the New Testament and biblical perspectives in general on servant leadership."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Claremont School of Theology"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["e7e2d3cb-fc51-4ba5-a7fd-d43f3f8c150b"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791131865456836608,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:54:17.383Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:07:34Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:55:39Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"6e8d5820-fddc-4867-ada9-15332335a8c3","accessControl_ssim":["d7d2f248-3bba-484b-bbe9-571f9cd6018c"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Contextualization: a key to effective preaching among the Yoruba of Nigeria"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:07:33Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T01:22:22Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["0b1352f4-98fa-468a-9801-485ed2ddad9b"],"hasLease_ssim":["a8bd8f19-184d-4dc6-8161-9a6484a35e55"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Claremont School of Theology"],"advisor_tesim":["Lincoln E Galloway"],"year_tesim":["2005"],"location_tesim":["Africa","Nigeria"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Sunday Olasoji Onadipe"],"publisher_tesim":["Claremont School of Theology"],"subject_tesim":["Yoruba (African people)","Church history","Evangelistic work","Preaching"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This project proposes that contextualization in preaching is indispensable to effective communication of the gospel among the Yoruba of Nigeria. The author combines practical suggestions for contextual preaching with perspectives from theological, missiological, biblical, and cultural studies. The author illustrates this claim by analyzing four sermon samples, which embody some aspects of the religio-cultural ethos and communication forms of the Yoruba. Instead, it has tended to rely upon approaches which focus primarily on conveying information, especially that which is distinctive to Adventism, leaving spiritual formation to somehow occur as a by-product. This project proposes a practice-based approach to the process of preparing people for membership in the Seventh-day Adventist Church. This approach is primarily designed around spiritual practices, but it also provides for the full engagement of the church's fundamental doctrinal beliefs. Drawing from the works of Clifford Geertz, Alasdair MacIntyre, Craig Dykstra, Dorothy Bass, Miroslav Volf, and their colleagues, a model of spiritual practices is developed and explained. This model is then placed in conversation with approaches currently in use by Seventh-day Adventists. As a part of this dialogue, pastors in the Southeastern California Conference of Seventh-day Adventists are surveyed to surface areas of concurrence with, or resistance to, the idea of a practice-centered approach. Next, possibilities are explored for developing an approach that would suggest a list of practices central to Seventh-day Adventist experience, which, when engaged, would also provide a context for reflecting upon the fundamental points of church doctrine. Finally, a description of what this approach might look like in the context of the Seventh-day Adventist Church is suggested, based on the practices of engaging scripture, awareness, Sabbath observance, wholeness, anticipation, worship, discernment, hospitality, service, and community."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Claremont School of Theology"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["e7e2d3cb-fc51-4ba5-a7fd-d43f3f8c150b"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791132070747045888,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:57:33.163Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:26:34Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:59:38Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"d84e7f47-fca0-47ea-9ec1-f5692f78a741","accessControl_ssim":["da267625-a224-4669-97f0-8002a4575de4"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Contextualization in Korean-American preaching"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:26:34Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:18:58Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["08039947-ca8a-4ed7-bf53-a78105c50c88"],"hasLease_ssim":["a7fd079e-727e-45ac-8472-74bc9e170751"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Claremont School of Theology"],"advisor_tesim":["Lincoln E Galloway"],"year_tesim":["2004"],"location_tesim":["United States"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Seong S Yuk"],"publisher_tesim":["Claremont School of Theology"],"subject_tesim":["Christianity and culture","Korean Americans","Preaching"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The effective communication of the message between the pulpit and the Korean-Americans is directly concerned with knowing the context. Based on an analysis of the Korean-American context, the Korean-American preacher should attempt the proper coordination between the context and text, and suggest the hermeneutical contact points in which the context (congregation) meets the Word of God. The cultural, ethnic, religious, and immigrational perspectives could be the contact points for the preaching."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Claremont School of Theology"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["e7e2d3cb-fc51-4ba5-a7fd-d43f3f8c150b"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791132205488013312,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:59:41.662Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:26:15Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:59:15Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"d1646d11-c680-4174-a05b-6700c9ebf059","accessControl_ssim":["f4c459f1-17fc-4eaa-b00e-971cc48cde05"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["The world still needs God: an understanding of the biblical God as love from the perspective of process thought and its application to ministry in sermons"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:26:15Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:07:19Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["ca7bb8f7-c49d-4a8b-ab4e-3892ca3c0361"],"hasLease_ssim":["85b51c08-947d-4bb4-a3bb-0b585ff93b46"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Claremont School of Theology"],"advisor_tesim":["David Ray Griffin"],"year_tesim":["2004"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Myong D Han"],"publisher_tesim":["Claremont School of Theology"],"subject_tesim":["God--Biblical teaching","Process theology"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This project attempts to explain God as represented in the Bible to modern people in tune with modern mentality. To accomplish this, the project needs to satisfy three requirements from the perspective of process thought. These are logical consistency, empirical applicability and adequateness, and relatedness with Christian identity. The methodology and the theoretical basis for this project are based on the analysis of human experience, the evolution of human consciousness, and the authenticity of intuitions contained in the Bible. The basic idea for this project is the contrast between the past and present consciousness of human beings from an evolutionary perspective. In the Bible, God's love causes God to create, sustain, and redeem the world. Therefore, the existence of human beings and the world is necessarily based on God's love. Two sermons are prepared as examples to apply this understanding of process theology to God in the Bible."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Claremont School of Theology"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["e7e2d3cb-fc51-4ba5-a7fd-d43f3f8c150b"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791132180997472256,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:59:18.306Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:25:35Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:53:40Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"439e2be3-f2d7-497c-9072-5c92e6384d27","accessControl_ssim":["4556386b-5f88-48d4-bbcd-14381054f0f4"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Difficult issues in homosexuality in a liberal Christian community: creating a table for dialogue"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:25:34Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T00:05:46Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["5a35bd9b-870f-4433-b969-1a04f800ba7b"],"hasLease_ssim":["4cbaefca-76ff-47be-b9cf-8f09232f349a"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Claremont School of Theology"],"advisor_tesim":["Carol Lakey Hess"],"year_tesim":["2004"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["John S Ellington"],"publisher_tesim":["Claremont School of Theology"],"subject_tesim":["Congregations","Homosexuality","Liberalism (Religion)"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This project presents a transformative educational model that liberal churches may use to help discuss the difficult issues surrounding homosexuality. The model outlines the procedures, through questions, exercises and reflections that will help a liberal church, which has already affirmed the right for homosexuals to participate fully in their congregation, to uncover the diversity of opinion that exists within that congregation. That diversity may include those who do not agree with every aspect of homosexuality and this model is designed to life that up and promote dialogue about it. The research method incorporates library research, interviews and questionnaires. The design of the model uses theology, current transformational models, the church context where the research is done, and reflection. The conclusions find that much more diversity exists in this liberal church than thought and that could be significant in moving the process of including homosexuals beyond a vote to an intentional, continuing process of acceptance within any church."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Claremont School of Theology"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["e7e2d3cb-fc51-4ba5-a7fd-d43f3f8c150b"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791131829603926016,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:53:43.191Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:25:34Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:53:55Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"4be01602-2328-44be-91c3-25cde7b500b0","accessControl_ssim":["ffae67a2-bb5f-4ed0-9eea-78027249c984"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["An approach to achieving effective Korean Methodist Church organization: an application of organization development theory"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:25:33Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T00:21:39Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["fcca87bf-20c8-4a42-b259-0ff4165e4893"],"hasLease_ssim":["eaaa5bf6-8c2d-454e-ba1d-e0ab87612316"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Claremont School of Theology"],"advisor_tesim":["Scott Cormode"],"year_tesim":["2004"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Kwang Seog Oh"],"publisher_tesim":["Claremont School of Theology"],"subject_tesim":["Organizational change","Kidokkyo Taehan Kamnihoe"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This study examines the model of Organization Development Theory (ODT) and applies it to church management of the Korean Methodist Church (KMC) to enable individual churches to meet more effectively the challenges that churches experience within their changing context.
