This project seeks to discover approaches to mainline denominational preaching that effectively communicate to the baby boom generation. An examination of currents in nineteenth century American religious history and responses by African Americans reveals an intense effort at identity that is true to both the experience of being Christian and being African.  The project develops the social context that gave rise to the independent African-American church, and focuses on the dissimilarities of African Americans in the areas of biblical identity and the conversion experience. The hermeneutical challenge is to recognize the ambiguity of the African-American church as a separatist institution justified in its existence in light of the pain of African-American communities. Though the independent church movement institutionalized an ambiguous relationship to the evangelical tradition, the independent churches were clear about the need for freedom. This project is an historical overview of Seventh-Day Adventist and African religious culture, seeking to extract the principal tenets of each tradition to blend them into a more dynamic worship style that is appealing to the African American community and faithful to the traditions and objectives of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church at the same time.  This project suggests that since traditional Black Seventh-Day Adventist public evangelism typically combines 'the truth' (rationality) with rhythm (emotion), by coloring the weekly worship service with these elements, a dynamic worship style could result. The method of research integrates material from the author's experience of twenty-two years of military service, thirteen years of ordained ministry, and experience from personal involvement in Adult Children of Alcoholics.  Short-term prevention methods suggested are regulating the supply of alcoholic beverages, shaping drinking practices directly, and reducing environmental risk. With such help, some recovering people might find an additional center of support and guidance for whole-life renewal. The systems approach provided a significant shift in perception about the congregation, which enabled the pastor to bring positive action to a very difficult situation. Finally, prayers from literature and the arts, mass meetings, music, and devotions/worship experiences were cited.  Liberation themes emphasizing socio-political transformation were the central
