Our society suggests an endlessness of both desire and consumption--which some now question more boldly in the public sphere. Though the proposed problems and related solutions are diverse, some current, broad themes can be found. The prosperity churches are referred to as 'mega-churches' because their membership numbers are in the thousands.  However, they account for only one percent of congregations. Vulnerability, loss, and grief are universal phenomena providing a key to analysis of the issue.  Correlation is done between the individual experience of grief with collective data regarding the Old Testament experience, the Black American experience, and research into episodes of mass trauma.  Insights from these studies are applied in an analysis of a particular ministry to the homeless.
