Open-ended interviews were conducted with five people with diverse grief experiences from the Protestant Evangelical, specifically Baptist, faith tradition. The results of the study found that most people depended on family and close friends as their primary source of support.  Some felt supported by their church, but most felt church members were uncomfortable with discussions about their grief. The relationship of complicated mourning and alcoholism is explored.  The 'thick description' of Geertz, the 'method of correlation' of Tillich, and the 'intercultural spirituality' of Lartey are used to examine three case studies; concepts from Bowlby, Rando, Masterson, Hammer and Hammer, and Brown; and theological perspectives from the Bible. This project involves working with the corporate and personal grief of a particular congregation in its attempts to deal with a series of losses within the church. This project proposes that correlations between personal and corporate grief allow techniques used in facilitating the grief process in one to aid in the grief process of the other.  Deliberate use of pastoral work aided the congregation in its grief journey. Correlations were found between personal and corporate grief. Ministers as well as laity may well wait for an individual to approach them with a grief-related situation before they give thought to what will be said or done in order to help the bereaved.  In that 'on the spot' form of ministry, the minister does not present his/her best pastoral side and the care-receiver may walk away feeling as though their needs have not been addressed adequately.  This dissertation is designed as a practical resource to assist both clergy and laity in the development of an intentional grief ministry within their respective congregational settings. It takes two forms: that of evaluation of the particular church's current ministry to those experiencing grief as well as instruction in the establishment of an intentional grief ministry. The result is a grief workshop design, with comments by three evaluators. This thesis incorporates theoretical concepts from pastoral care, cultural anthropology and theological conclusions from psalms of communal lament to more adequately describe these processes. Correlation is done between the individual experience of grief with collective data regarding the Old Testament experience, the Black American experience, and research into episodes of mass trauma.  Insights from these studies are applied in an analysis of a particular ministry to the homeless.
