This project focused on a group of preachers who gathered to engage scripture in creative ways and then to continue practices individually. The author explored ways in which intentionally making time for spiritual practices affects the preacher as well as the sermon. The research involved a twelve-week study of a lectionary group of preachers, interviews of numerous preachers outside the group, and journal entries. These operating systems are emotion, social interaction, cognitive functioning, physiological learning, and reflective insights. Beyond the presence of these five systems, this project seeks to determine how often these five areas are interrelated in the preaching event. This project surveys nine new church developments in various stages of congregational development.  With so many techniques available for establishing new churches, the function and efficacy of preaching and its impact on the character development of new churches is examined.  An online survey filled out by pastors and lay leadership sought to determine the perceived relationship between preaching and certain missional practices in the new churches. The project explores texts on preaching to determine the degree to which they see transformation as the purpose of preaching.  Walter Brueggemann and Walter Wink offer insight into what transformation means and how it comes about. Transformative preaching seeks to help the listener move from the destroying way of dominant cultural values to the giving way of covenant rooted in neighbor love.  The preacher evokes transformation with Scriptural images that offer alternative visions of how life can be lived faithfully and meaningfully.  The project develops a model for preaching that will aid in the transformative work of pastoral ministry, and demonstrates this model in three sermons. A representative sampling of sermons is studies in order to trace this movement. A representative sampling of the congregation is interviewed in order to portray its response to this change and to discover connections between figural preaching and Christian practices. Noticeable change in the practice of preaching is discerned and described.
