Meaningful, well thought-out liturgical events are extremely effective in developing Christian identity, an identity that can prevail against the other words and other stories that would coopt and destroy the unique identity of the church. It shows ways to identify that grief, and pictures the dynamics of three congregations in grief. Some stories reveal a problem of nonforgiveness among the people. Theological research reveals that though our memories will not release our hurts, there must be some sharing of God's grace and forgiveness between the members of the church. When a minister discovers a problem like nonforgiveness, there must be some constructive way to address the problem without inflaming past wounds. The problem is outlined from a sociological, theological and local parish perspective.  Self-denial ethics and ethics based on expressive individualism are examined sociologically.  Karl Barth's doctrine of justification is compared with Philip Brickman's definition of commitment. Christian freedom is discussed as the necessary ingredient for lifelong commitments. This paper focuses on the recovery of soul and on the care of souls in the practice of pastoral care and counseling.  Research focuses on the depth psychology of Carl Gustav Jung and the gospel of John.  A comparison is made between the Self, the central archetype in the psychology of Carl Jung, and the Christ presented in archetypal symbols in John.  Both address the creative, dynamic, unifying center of personality; Jung does so in psychological language, John in theological/christological language. The act of ministry and appendices include worship services and sermons based on Cycle A of the lectionary from Lent through Ascension.
