The study looked at three models being used by United Methodist churches for multi-site ministry: purchase and build, church merger, and existing space/rental.  The study used semi-structured interviews with focus groups from three multi-site United Methodist churches.  The study focused on the decision making process in becoming a multi-site church, the transitioning process from a single to multi-site church, the experience of being a multi-site church, and the relationship to the United Methodist hierarchy.  The study found that most churches do not start with the intention of becoming a multi-site church, but are influenced by various factors, including some type of crisis, a strong evangelistic emphasis, or a powerful vision. Regarding the transition process, the study found that a sufficient amount of time and careful planning were necessary for success.  Key factors were a realistic understanding of the difficulties, the importance of leadership, communication within the congregation and outside, effective advertising, and the use of missioners.  The study found that there were struggles as well as benefits in the practice of multi-site ministry.  Leadership and leadership development were important factors.  Benefits included reaching different demographics and providing variety in worship and ministry styles. Struggles included relating to other churches of the same denomination, dealing with finances, and maintaining a sense of unity.  Regarding the relationship with the hierarchy, the study found little information. Most churches experienced minimal help or contact with church officials except in cases of conflict with other churches.  There was often misunderstanding with the multi-site model.  Greater participation by district superintendents and bishops could be expected with the merger model. The strategy that has proven to be the most biblical and effective in accomplishing this task is that of establishing or planting churches that are reaching people with the gospel in cities, towns, and villages.  However, it takes called and gifted men to plant these churches and the reality is that 'the harvest is plentiful but the laborers are few' (Matthew 9:37). The purpose of this study is to discover how the Northern Illinois Presbytery of the Presbyterian Church in America can develop a growing pool of qualified church planters in order to increase the rate of successful church planting in that presbytery. Is there a way for this presbytery, as well as the Church at large, to increase the number of men qualified for church planting so that it might more effectively fulfill the Great Commission and respond to the growing needs and opportunities that exist in America, a nation that is in serious spiritual decline?  It is the finding of this paper that a Church Planting Apprenticeship Program built around the biblical model of mentoring that Jesus demonstrated with His own disciples has significant potential for developing this growing pool of qualified church planters.  Such a program might also make possible, by God's grace, the ignition of a church planting multiplication movement that will allow the church to reach the increasingly large numbers of unchurched and unbelieving people among all the different people groups of America. The problem addressed is stated in the form of a question: is it possible for the Christian to use the worship of the corporate church as a bridge between the non-Christian and Christ?  The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of a model which harnesses the worshipping church in the process of evangelism. A study was made of a one-year experiment in the life of one Midwestern congregation, using five special Sundays as means for Christians to invite non-Christian friends to an encounter with Christ and His church.  The strategy was developed around two hypotheses. The first suggested that it was possible to move the inwardly focused church to an outwardly focused church through individual Christian invitations to large church celebrations.  The second hypothesis suggested that it was possible to activate the inactive Christian evangelist by providing the necessary spiritual and worship resources that strongly encourage the Christian to be involved in the process of evangelism. Data were collected from a focus group within the congregation using a pre-experimental measure of attitudes, and post-experimental attitudes.  Data were also collected from a voluntary survey of visitors of the special Sunday celebrations. Study findings indicate that the experimental method was, in fact, effective in reaching larger numbers of non-Christians for an exposure to the gospel.
