The purpose of this study was to examine how elders and pastoral search committees in Presbyterian Church in America congregations approached the pastoral transition process when their previous pastor served for ten or more years. Qualitative case studied were utilized to investigate the transition process. The method of research was a qualitative research. In 2005, six interviews were conducted, each with a staff person responsible for family ministry in a large evangelical church. Implementation of family ministries varied due to the churches makeup and vision. All staff persons mentioned their focus is on preventing family problems rather than solving them through counseling. A quantitative research method (written surveys and focus group interviews) was used for this study. It was determined that influences shaping members' ideas of leadership include scripture, Stone-Campbell principles and practices, workplace experiences, and American political structures. The extent of thee influences varied according to a member's age, gender, and length of association with the Stone-Campbell movement. As such this study was intended to be an impact study and the research methodology qualitative in nature. Together, the quantitative and qualitative aspects of this study revealed that Concordia is a strong academic institution that effectively imparts theological knowledge that is foundational for pastoral ministry, and that it successfully teaches its students to think theologically. The author, using a qualitative approach to his research, focuses on examining the effects of stress and burnout in the pastorate by concentrating in the areas of the pastor, the pastor's family, and the pastor's congregation. With some 1500 pastors leaving the ministry each month, the findings of this research reveals the majority of pastors understand their stress levels to be increased but very few are doing anything preventative.
