These commonalities become appropriate considerations in the tasks of 1) pastoral psychotherapy and 2) the language of theology.  A methodology of stepwise interviews was incorporated in a qualitative study of ten 'barren' women.  This population was chosen under the assumption that the frustration of the childbearing capacity engendered in a woman who wanted to bear children a necessity to articulate and thereby resolve her loss. The results indicate, in the context of childbearing, commonalities in the use of certain metaphors, styles of speaking, types of experience, and ways of relating to oneself, others, and God. United Methodist clergy in the Mattoon district and lay persons in the Casey United Methodist Church were surveyed to determine the stress and satisfaction they experience.  The target groups apparently were coping well at the time the surveys were administered.  A stress management workshop was conducted for the participants.  Suggestions of ways to cope with stress were shared. Forty-four sessions of Presbyterian churches in western Pennsylvania, ranging in size from 47 to 700 members, responded to a questionnaire devised to measure right brain-left brain tendencies.  The smaller congregations gave more right brain responses than the larger congregations; results were statistically significant at the .01 level. In addition, the pastor and laity of a recently created multiple-point charge were interviewed.  This information was analyzed and presented at a clergy workshop. Worship is re-structured; a vocational group is formed; two study groups are offered; and adminsitration is modified, beginning with the process of adopting a congregational mission statement. A questionnaire format was designed to ascertain the projected levels of comfort the respondent would have concerning his/her own and his/her spouse's friendships.  Questions were also asked about perceptions of the spouse's comfort levels.  Four different types of friendship were surveyed to minimize the possibility of bias had the survey only covered cross-gender friendships. Three scales, verified in previous studies, also were used. Kendall's tau-b correlations were used on the data.  The results showed that a majority of respondents were comfortable with all the types of friendship studied. However, there was a clear reduction in comfort for cross-gender friendships and mixed-gender group friendships. Males tended to be less comfortable than females with same-gender and cross-gender friendships, with females reporting less comfort for couple and group friendships.
