The small group leaders who have served for over 4 years have experienced fatigues and burnouts.  Prior to this project, the church did not have a process to help recovering fatigued leaders.  In response to this specific need, the candidate developed and implemented a training program that included lecture, mentoring, practice of various spiritual disciplines, sharing of experiences, and positive encouragement and feedback from peers to help the small group leaders to recover from fatigues and burnouts.  This program prepared the leaders to serve the Lord with renewed strength and spiritual vigor. In the course of 3 months, participants and the candidate learned skills and attitudes to spirituality stay fresh and strong by seeking intimacy with the Lord through exercising various spiritual disciplines. This project assessed and addressed the risk of compassion fatigue.  Counselors were taught the definition for and characteristics of compassion fatigue and given an assessment to measure the risk.  Six counselors were selected, based on their assessment scores, to participate in an eight-week project.  Participants discovered how the symptoms of compassion fatigue impacted their spiritual, emotional, physical and psychological well-being. The study includes one hundred staff nurses at a medical center in central California in which the risk of compassion fatigue was measured prior to intervention.  The intervention included eight hours of workshop and three follow-up sessions in which steps to reduce compassion fatigue were introduced. There were twenty-two participants in the intervention and every participant indicated in the post workshop measurement a significant reduction in compassion fatigue risk. Research was conducted on the topics of self-care and burnout. An examination of the Gospels had as a goal finding a model of self-care in Jesus' life. An attempt was made to reconcile the command to 'deny self' and 'to love your neighbor as yourself'. A course involving self-care techniques and examples from the life of Jesus was developed and taught to seventeen laity. It is an attempt to provide information about stress, and to emphasize coping skills. After preliminary research, the writer found that role stress, conflict stress, and culture stress were three key stressors in the lives of Valley pastors. An eight hour seminar on stress in ministry was scheduled.  The two-fold goal of increasing awareness of stress and increasing coping efficacy was emphasized in the seminar.  After the seminar, six pastors were monitored over a six-week period to determine benefits received from the seminar experience. Ministry burnout can be prevented.  Through research and field application, this project provides cognitive information leading to learned coping skills that will help ministers to avoid abandonment and ministry, family and faith.  A cognitive map of burnout and recovery describes sources and processes of harmful stress and motivational stress. Pastors face this societal stress, plus additional anxieties stemming from their ministry. The resultant effect is harmful, physically and emotionally, to the minister.  The writer theorized that pastors could learn coping skills to limit the impact of the stress they faced.  Coping skills dealing with three major areas of ministry stress were presented in a seminar forum to a select group of pastors.  A pre-post stress test was given the participants.
