Churches can have and do all the 'right things': congregational unity, biblically faithful worship and teaching, baptisms, large missions receipts, deep savings, community outreach programs, and denominational notoriety--and yet dontinue to experience numerical stagnation and even decline. This project discusses the local church as a living organism exploring the theory that every church is unique such that identifying and actively expressing its congregational DNA can lead to revitalization. In this study the responses to a series of congregational surveys, interviews, and inventories were 'interpreted' and used to identify a church's DNA. It was developed by Pastor Malaku Mekuria for the members of this church, so as to be effective and fruitful members of the body of Christ as they ministry in the church. Nine people from Maranatha Fellowship were trained for seven weeks in the subject of the discovery of spiritual gifts. The participants evaluated and deepened their understanding of worship and intentionality through group sessions and the use of workbooks. They also wrote, implemented and evaluated weekly action plans to give opportunity to practice intentionality in leading worship. Finally, participants were asked to commit themselves to continued intentionality in their worship leadership role. In the context of an eight-week, learning-focused, mentoring relationship, participants developed leadership and communication skills, and set goals for spiritual and ministerial growth. All participants showed growth in all specified areas in their final assessment of the mentoring program. The project director identified five leadership skills, five communication skills and five spiritual formation qualities necessary for ministry excellence. However, traumatic events and the influence of Post-modernism present unique challenges to the discipleship process. This project uses an eight week study to help new Christians who have experienced trauma begin growing in their faith while addressing real life issues resulting from these events. This report reflects the process of developing a team of missional leaders who commit themselves to lead the church to become missional.
