During the ten-week teaching module, developed by the researcher, seventeen participants engaged in learning experiences and assignments designed to increase their self-awareness in cross-cultural encounters and their understanding of culture. The basic premise of the project is that although spiritual growth, or life transformation, is something only God produces, there is a definite role that individuals play as recipients of God's grace. Although spiritual growth is a process, it also requires intentional effort on the part of the believer. The Apostle Paul indicates the need for this kind of balance when he says, 'Continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you to will and to act according to his good purpose' (Philippians 2:12-13). This pilot project involves offering a discipleship class called The Spiritual Exploration Class. The class challenges participants to identify a spiritual growth edge in their lives. Then, within the context of a small group and together with a spiritual director, each participant develops a personal spiritual growth plan to give focus to his or her efforts. The project essentially serves as a catalyst to move a person toward spiritual growth. The success of the pilot project is measured against the stated objectives of the project for the purpose of improving future programming. Phase three involved the post-training interview and evaluation of participants and the project director. Documents on deacon selection and training criteria were produced. Clergy are often the first chaplains to respond to community disasters, providing pastoral care and victim assistance. But, chaplaincy is very different than being the pastor of a church, and ministering within the context of cultural and religious diversity is very different than being the pastoral leader of a specific congregation within a particular religious tradition. The goal of the project was to equip lay leaders with practical resources to enable them to serve as Bible study leaders.  The project participants were trained in the use of various Bible study materials to use with small groups.  Prayer walks were a vital part of the strategy project participants used in preparing the neighborhood to be receptive to a Bible study.  The results differed from what was expected; only three small groups were started. It will show that public prayers based on preparation have a biblical foundation and can be very powerful in ministering to the listener.  Thus the prayer leader has a tremendous responsibility.  The necessity for sufficient preparation of public prayer as well as understanding the audience will be explained.  While benefits to the corporate membership can be derived through effective public prayers, the prayer leader, himself, will be a special beneficiary. After a model of 'servant leader supervision' was constructed, pastors were invited to a two-phase workshop.     The first phase introduced the model, the skills necessary to implementing it, and culminated in the pastors writing their own supervision plans.  The workshop's second phase (a month later) focused on their implementation efforts. In a two-phase process, the project director equipped a small group of church members, who then discipled another individual. Theologically, the basis of the project stems from Jesus' training of His disciples, with additional references to Paul's training of disciples like Timothy.  The project director worked to develop a disciple-making team in a local church historically weak in informed, intentional disciple making.  As a result of the project, the participants formed a team to plan and implement a discipleship strategy for the church. The training has three objectives for the project participants: (1) increase knowledge of the origin, culture, character, theology and religious practices of the target group; (2) develop skill in witnessing; and (3) persevere in witnessing. The project engaged an eight phase process which included the following study: (1) theology of witnessing; (2) knowledge of basic history, culture, and theology and religious practices related to witnessing; (3) presentation of witnessing module; (4) and how to persevere in witnessing.  Testing instruments were also developed to test all goals and objectives.
