It is then possible to choose which philosophical assumptions of secular personality theories and counseling methods are compatible with a Christian worldview and which are to be rejected by the discerning Christian counselor. They saw the family as the first church, and the greater congregation serving families in a way that strengthened families, churches and society's common good, in that order.  This thesis explores one enduring error which may have served to drive a tragically unnecessary stake into the heart of the Puritan vision. The paper includes a theology for the family, an exploration of the church's role in spiritual formation, and the literature review.
