My thesis-project tested a five-week annual small group curriculum at Harvest Bible Chapel and the results strongly recommend the use of the curriculum. Creating sermon-based small groups to reinforce sermons enhances biblical discipleship and produces life change. Such groups help people grow spiritually in a complex world that communicates many ideas. Chapter one raises the possibility that resurfacing the sermon's main idea and desired application in a discussion group can extend the purpose of the sermon. Chapter two provides a theological foundation for the role of the pastor as preacher and the use of small groups. Chapter three provides analysis from ten churches interviewed to discover reasons why sermon-based small groups work, providing a best practices list, specific challenges and how to overcome them, and principles for writing curriculum. Evaluative research formed the basis of inquiry exploring 2 Corinthians 3:18, its surrounding context (3:1-7:1), Exodus 33:18-19 and Genesis 3:1-6 to form a biblical framework of creation, fall and redemption. The Transtheoretical model derived from studies of addictions and best-of-practice interviews supplied training insights. Within the cell group there is the community of Christ. The result of this project showed an increase in the participants knowledge of Scripture as well as a tangible lifestyle change.
