It upgrades the orthodox Christian worldview to postmodern standards through a study of cosmology, history, time studies and comparative religion. The theological foundation for this thesis is based on a study of various biblical characters and biblical teachings to specifically observe how God identifies with the hearers of his message. A review of available literature and interviews with experts revealed significant agreement on the pervasive influence of television on the lives of Canadians. The focus of this thesis is not on the content of television but the medium of television. This thesis attempts to zero in on why television is so successful at attracting hours of weekly attention from so many Canadians. It goes on from there to suggest what preachers can do to better attract the attention of their congregations in order to better communicate biblical truth. The findings, from this research, were then put to the test by means of a survey. Nineteen people were selected because of their expertise and surveyed to confirm the findings in the literature. They were specifically asked how preachers can adapt their preaching methods to better identify with their television-saturated audiences. The research was conducted through an ethnological approach using life history interviews of six women. A goal was to consider the women's orthodoxy as compared to orthodox Shiite doctrine. Implications for the evangelization of Lebanese Shiite women were also considered. It was also the goal to design a seminar that would assist pastors in this task. Recognizing the biblical mandate which we have been given, the decline in attendance within the Canadian church and the needs of contemporary mankind, there was and is justification for pursuing this task. Through research and a survey sent to 300 Canadian churches information was gleaned which described how pastors felt about their seminary training and their ability in preaching to a post-modern society. Canadian statistics prove that the Canadian Evangelical church is in an unhealthy state. It was determined that if pastors were to give energy to the task of preaching with relevance and if the structures of the church would support such preaching then there was hope that by the enabling of the Holy Spirit the Canadian church could grow again. It reveals how the 'being'--heart, soul, mind--of the pastor is reflected in the 'being' of the people the pastor leads. A primary premise of the paper is that pastors focus their attention more on 'doing' than 'being.'  Pastors are searching for help and hope, attempting to find the program, plan, or method that will bring growth to the church. However, the power and work of God rests in the 'being' of His people through the indwelling work of the Holy Spirit. Programs, plans, and methods only aid the work of the Spirit. The thesis begins with the statement of the problem of how pastors misplace their primary focus on 'doing' activities. It reveals the scriptural truths about 'being,' and reveals the 'being' of God's leaders throughout the Bible. It then diagnoses the influence society has on the pastor with regards to 'being' and 'doing.' The work contains a chapter on the pastor and how to evaluate 'being,' and concludes with biblical and ministry reflections to assist the pastor and church in applying the truths of the thesis. The thesis reflects the ministry application at Chino Valley Community Church, and includes extended ministry opportunities beyond the church. It is concerned with questions having to do with the discipline of prayer in the spiritual development of Christians. A primary premise of the work is that greater practice of prayer and a more disciplined prayer life will aid and encourage spiritual growth.  The author suggests that many followers of Jesus Christ are not utilizing the great gift of prayer in their lives. The study attempts to correlate greater participation in prayer and the spiritual development of the one who is praying. Further, there is an attempt to assess at what point the participants believed that there was a 'diminishing return' to their prayer life, i.e., how much time dedicated to prayer is enough each day. Further, there is an attempt to correlate increased activity of prayer and the spiritual revitalization of an entire congregation. The thesis begins with theological reflection on the nature and value of prayer. The work moves on to an historical analysis of the Sugaw Creek Presbyterian Church, followed by a review of the literature pertinent to the subject. The project design is discussed, and the outcomes of the project are noted. The thesis is introduced  by examining the theological meaning and importance of the doctrines of justification and sanctification as pillar doctrines undergirding any true model of Christian spirituality. A brief history of the theological development of these doctrines is provided, as well as the views that Edwards held on these matters. The first chapter then proceeds to examine Edwards as a man. A brief biographical sketch is provided, followed by an exploration of Edwards as a pastor-theologian. The work then seeks to assess the influence of Edwards upon his contemporaries and the contemporary church. The second chapter looks at Edwards' theology of God's glory as seen in his Dissertation concerning the end for which God created the world. Chapter Three investigates Edwards' theology of Christian spirituality as seen in his Treatise concerning religious affections. The transition is then made to the practical ramifications of the truths of Edwards' theology by the development of an Edwardsean model of Christian spirituality. The primary premise of the work is that communication a sound biblical theology of worship is essential to preparing ministers for genuinely effective Christian life and ministry. The author suggests that most Assemblies of God students operate with a truncated understanding of worship, and therefore need to appreciate the biblical teaching that worship is the ultimate calling of humanity which should encompass every attitude and action of life before God. The thesis project presents a biblical understanding of the interpersonal nature of the worship of God. It includes a brief historical survey of worship practice in the church, and also examines the Old and New Testaments to delineate a New Testament theology of worship that can be applied to contemporary practice. Contemporary issues of corporate worship style and music are analyzed according to constructive biblical principles. Contemporary homiletics focuses on the form of the sermon by applying the knowledge of communication and good storytelling to the biblical text in order to make the sermon interesting and relevant to the modern audience. The study of preaching that examines the spiritual power behind the sermon and also the spiritual powers of darkness that attempt to hinder the reception of the gospel has received much less attention in contemporary study. After completing a theological reflection of these issues and a literature review of relevant material, this study will examine the issue of worldview and establish that the western worldview is incomplete and inconsistent with the biblical account. Second, having established the existence and influence of spiritual powers in the world, the study will examine the role of the Holy Spirit as he gives spiritual power to preaching. Third, the study will examine the particular ways in which the kingdom of darkness attempts to hinder the reception of the preaching of the gospel. Fourth, the study will examine the role of prayer in the life of the preacher and its relationship to preaching. Fifth, the study will propose a number of foundational principles for preaching, in light of the cosmological reality.
