Synagogue affiliation rates are on a steady decline, and American Jews, particularly younger Jews, have lost the historic value of affiliation. Something else is needed to reclaim the collective wisdom of lived theology (Jewishness). It has been impossible for Judaism to speak of God in relation to the world, devoid of Jewish practice. The methodology consists of five parts: the description of Jewish-Christian intermarriage in the United States; a discussion of the chavurah movement in the contemporary Jewish scene; a history of the founding of the Interfaith Chavurah for Liberal Judaism in Greater Hartford; the synthesis of a goal attainment model based on the works of Donald Metz and Talcott Parsons; and, the account of the ICLJ's first year and analysis of its achievements.  Although the ICLJ was founded as a conventional congregation, its identity sometimes became ambivalent and bordered on an informal support group.
