Project"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Hardee, Brian C."],"subject_tesim":["Public worship","Church management","Prayer"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["Recent changes in Federal laws have created an increased awareness of the potential for violations of personal privacy in many different areas of community life, including the Prayers of the People as they are offered in many churches. By writing in the form of a pastoral essay, I examine the privacy issues that exist in common church practices. I then look specifically at the Prayers of the People as they have been developing in the Evangelical and Reformed tradition of the United Church of Christ to highlight the growing need to have worship leaders and planners examine their Prayers of the People to see if there are privacy issues present in their worship. I seek to highlight the very real possible damages that can be caused through the unauthorized giving out of personal information in many of these prayers, while also pointing out the possible qualities of that prayer time that can be lost in an attempt to completely safeguard the privacy rights of all who are involved. I then suggest steps that can be taken to preserve public sharing during the Prayers of the People while simultaneously attempting to respect people's right to privacy. Intended to help congregations become more organizationally nimble, this interactive program briefly examines factors that have informed 'the way we've always done it' and imagines creative ways forward based on living systems theory (e.g., Margaret Wheatley) and design thinking concepts (e.g., Tim Brown) in the context of an ever-changing world. Four multi-media Exploration Sessions are offered for use by congregational leaders, and reading material encourages experimentation and discovery. Secular organizational and human relations theories such as group development, open systems, negotiation and management styles are adaptable and useful in parish leadership.  Each of four cases, researched according to the Case Method Institute, was taught and critiqued at least twice to test relevance and learning effectiveness.  The writing and test teaching of the cases and theory resources were effective in teaching the dynamics of parish conflict and demonstrated the significance and relevance of behavioral and ethical theories to the managerial task in parish conflict. The author intervened with Transactional Analysis to identify factors that inhibited or facilitated the flow of energy.  Five hypotheses dealt with: 1) energizing ego states, 2) redirecting energy, 3) script decisions, 4) contracts, and 5) stroking.  In simulated situation and regular council meetings, data were gathered and redirecting energy considered.  Support was found that appropriately energized ego states facilitated decision-making, whereas inappropriately energized ego states inhibited decision-making.
