Yet UCC congregations are polarized. The UCC is congregational; the local congregation is the 'basic unit.' Unity must be nurtured within local congregations. Rooted in the scriptural call for unity amid diversity, and built upon the work of others calling for unity in the church, the author proposes a model addressing worship, proclamation, community and service. Diversity is brought out into the open and affirmed rather than being discouraged or ignored. Giving behavior of adult leaders from the United Church of Christ is also examined in relation to income, education, generation, and theological perspective. Three black pastors helped to create an interview protocol that could explore and define the black church tradition in the UCC. The interviews analyzed the pastor's context in ministry, authorization for ministry, Sunday morning worship practices, preaching, music, communion, baptism, special days, and printed resources used in worship. The reports reveal a remarkably consistent worship practice that reflects the black, 'rural' worship tradition of this region.  A central ritual act of nearly all churches in the study is believer's baptism by immersion. Data was gathered through surveys, written descriptions, and by personal interviews.  The research shows that there is a wide variety of experiences, many related to death and dying, regarded as important to faith; that persons experienced paranormal events; that the classic mystical experience is rare. After establishing a PPRC in a local church and identifying the need for a training process, such a process was developed. Four churches in Penn Northeast Conference, UCC, agreed to go through the process to test its effectiveness and each church evaluated the process.  The project showed the process worked. The study is conducted through reading and analysis of the print resources, interviews with denominational personnel, extensive questionnaires to lay members of the Pennsylvania Southeast Conference of the United Church of Christ and interviews with several selected congregations. The negotiating method is adapted from the Harvard Research Project.  Pastors and lay leaders in three congregations are involved in testing the model.  They meet with a facilitator for five sessions and use two test instruments, the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator and World View Test Instrument, to facilitate negotiations.
