The shift has enhanced the ends of marriage to acknowledge and include the importance of partnership and community. This project explains a contemporary understanding of the sacrament of marriage. Additionally, it presents the John Gottman research-based marital therapy process. It demonstrates the strong correlations between a Roman Catholic theology of marriage and Gottman's Sound Marital House theory. The project includes a literature review, descriptors of the Appalachian and postmodern mindsets arising from that review, a survey based on those descriptors, survey results and conclusions.  The survey was distributed in a two-church United Methodist Charge in central Pennsylvania. This dissertation provides a theoretical examination of these issues, including the biblical treatment of widows, sexuality and intimacy, age, and the place of widows in the church.  A group of women, most of whom are widows, examined these issues.  Following their consideration of these issues, this group designed and developed an ongoing ministry program with widows.  The process used to examine these issues and develop the ministry program is described in this dissertation. The major areas of concern for Lutherans are: Fox's semi-Pelagianism, his rejection of the traditional understanding of original sin, and the Christology of Creation Spirituality.  These differences cannot be reconciled, but by approaching Creation Spirituality as an aspect of sanctification, much of its teaching can be incorporated into a Lutheran theology.  The result of this integration is a Lutheran Creation Spirituality. The results of the study supported this thesis and lead to the implication that churches need to understand that the manner in which decisions are made is as important as what is decided.
