Listeners can be invited through narrative sermons to find points of connection between their lives and the lives of biblical characters.  Biblical characters can serve as archetypal figures in the lives of listeners. This disconnectedness can be overcome by allowing the Word of God to function as a center around which clergy and laity come together to plan sermons, worship, and ministry.  This project experiments with sermon and worship planning in a retreat setting involving clergy and laity, with lectionary texts as a focus of activities. Participants grow spiritually and a deeper relationship among participants evolves.  For four years the author invited laypersons into the sermon process.  Laypersons researched and studied texts on their own, and group reflection produced preaching  material.  A high degree of spiritual and intellectual growth was evident among the laypersons invited into the process.
