As the author recognized a growing spiritual maturity in his own life, he sought to ascertain if and how this was identifiable in the preaching event. The theory guiding this thesis is espoused in The Fully Alive Preacher by Mike Graves, which states 'if we want to become better preachers, we should first consider how we might become deeper persons.' The author found a symbiotic relationship between the spiritual maturity of the preacher and preaching. Congregational listeners verified the validity of this finding through both an analysis of their experience of the author's spiritual growth and through feedback on eight sermons preached within the congregation over three years."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["d722638c-a7e2-43f3-93ff-4762bde0dde7"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791133455262679040,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:19:33.540Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T12:13:47Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:27:57Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"e193c60d-375f-48bc-a035-ecfbc1696800","accessControl_ssim":["55d94e1c-26cb-40ed-af87-34361d3e471a"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Wisdom's footsteps: mission in an American Indian context"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T12:13:46Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:35:20Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["ac4595a9-1bd9-4f4c-b240-2e69cc38feeb"],"hasLease_ssim":["94e36f91-899f-475a-9c26-9b64bfbbd698"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago"],"advisor_tesim":["Michael Shelley"],"year_tesim":["2008"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Leslie Ann Whited Vance"],"publisher_tesim":["Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago"],"subject_tesim":["Indigenous peoples of North America","Missions"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The author's thesis is that Wisdom, Jesus Christ, is made known in a mosaic of culture(s). A pastor's identity informs how a preacher witnesses to the Word of God. Using The Witness of Preaching by Thomas G. Long, I discuss the various images he used to illustrate the roles of preachers: the herald, the paster, the storyteller/poet, and finally, the witness. I have drawn upon my own experiences as a child raised in the Lutheran Church -- Missouri Synod and how I moved from a  theology based in fear to a theology based in grace. As a secondary discourse I draw on Edwin H. Friedman's A Failure of Nerve: Leadership in the Age of the Quick Fix. Friedman uses the term 'non-anxious' and 'well-differentiated' to define these aspects of leadership; throughout this thesis I discuss what it means to become a leader and bear witness to God's Word as a preacher."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["d722638c-a7e2-43f3-93ff-4762bde0dde7"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791133844493041665,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:25:44.739Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":6,"label":"Unknown"}],"label":"Resource Type"},{"name":"creator_sim","items":[{"value":"David N Young","hits":1,"label":"David N Young"},{"value":"Gail S Hermodson","hits":1,"label":"Gail S Hermodson"},{"value":"Gregory Jose Villalon","hits":1,"label":"Gregory Jose Villalon"},{"value":"Jules R Erickson","hits":1,"label":"Jules R Erickson"},{"value":"Leslie Ann Whited Vance","hits":1,"label":"Leslie Ann Whited Vance"},{"value":"Michael E Thomas","hits":1,"label":"Michael E Thomas"}],"label":"Creator Sim"},{"name":"contributor_sim","items":[],"label":"Contributor"},{"name":"keyword_sim","items":[],"label":"Keyword"},{"name":"subject_sim","items":[{"value":"Leadership--Religious aspects--Christianity","hits":2,"label":"Leadership--Religious aspects--Christianity"},{"value":"Missions","hits":2,"label":"Missions"},{"value":"Catholic Church","hits":1,"label":"Catholic Church"},{"value":"Change--Religious aspects","hits":1,"label":"Change--Religious aspects"},{"value":"Clergy","hits":1,"label":"Clergy"},{"value":"Congregations","hits":1,"label":"Congregations"}],"label":"Subject"},{"name":"location_sim","items":[],"label":"Location"},{"name":"language_sim","items":[{"value":"English","hits":6,"label":"English"}],"label":"Language"},{"name":"publisher_sim","items":[{"value":"Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago","hits":6,"label":"Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago"}],"label":"Publisher"},{"name":"date_created_sim","items":[],"label":"Date Created"},{"name":"types_sim","items":[{"value":"Text","hits":6,"label":"Text"}],"label":"Type"},{"name":"year_sim","items":[{"value":"2008","hits":6,"label":"2008"}],"label":"Year"},{"name":"format_sim","items":[],"label":"Format"},{"name":"member_of_collections_ssim","items":[{"value":"Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago","hits":6,"label":"Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago"}],"label":"Collections"},{"name":"degree_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":6,"label":"Unknown"}],"label":"Degree"},{"name":"discipline_sim","items":[],"label":"Discipline"},{"name":"degree_granting_institution_sim","items":[{"value":"Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago","hits":6,"label":"Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago"}],"label":"Degree Granting Institution"},{"name":"department_sim","items":[],"label":"Department"},{"name":"funder_name_sim","items":[],"label":"Funder Name"},{"name":"event_title_sim","items":[],"label":"Event Title"},{"name":"event_date_sim","items":[],"label":"Event Date"},{"name":"institution_sim","items":[{"value":"Atla RIM","hits":6,"label":"Atla RIM"}],"label":"Host Institution"}],"pages":{"current_page":1,"next_page":null,"prev_page":null,"total_pages":1,"limit_value":10,"offset_value":0,"total_count":6,"first_page?":true,"last_page?":true}}}
