The focus is on the PC(USA) using the metaphor of the church in exile in American culture.  The research methods include social-theological reflection on the role of the PC(USA) in the current culture, biblical reflection on the proclamations of II Isaiah, and interviews with PC(USA) clergy.  The implication is that clergy are aware of the shifts in American culture, the diminishing role of the church, and the impact upon congregations. Interventions focused on an immediate need to share leadership more broadly in the church to avoid burning out leaders. Interventions included restructuring, spiritual gifts inventories, classes, and mentoring. Through research, personal experience, interviews with parishioners and lay preachers, as well as the Bishop of the Diocese, the author will show that the authority of the lay preacher does exists, but often not in the traditional manner understood by some Roman Catholics. Through surveys, group work, and observations of worshipping youth, the author proposes a model of conversational preaching that helps to bring youth into active participation with the development of the sermon. However, the dynamics of race and ethnicity are dominant presenting factors and often obstacles in multi-cultural arenas. Leaders therefore need to utilize different tools in order to overcome attitudinal and behavioral dynamics that impede a multi-cultural group's work.
