The project's goals were to research the congregation's knowledge and participation in community service and determine how it affected their faith, and how their faith affected their view of community service as they served those in need. The project also served in providing the minister knowledge, tools, and resources increasing his effectiveness in practicing ministry in the local congregation. The project enabled the minister to understand that spiritual formation and community service are significantly interrelated as one shares the gospel locally and globally. The scope of this research was limited to the African-American church plants of the SCSBC in the last decade. Personal participation in missions has been missing in many traditional South Carolina Baptist churches. There is a need to shift to a new paradigm of doing missions.  A growing number of South Carolina Baptist churches have implemented a partnership strategy--resulting in greater involvement among the congregation.  The methodology used in this field research was a case study involving six churches.  These churches had little missions involvement until adopting the partnership strategy. The author, therefore, sought for healthy models among growing churches in such settings and studied their common characteristics. Twenty-one possible growth dynamics were identified and eleven churches were studied to ascertain which of these dynamics were common to them and to what degree they might account for growth. Fifteen characteristics were found to contribute to the growth of churches and nine of these emerged as significant. Initiating the project was a survey of a congregation's perception of faith.  Results of the survey reflected the need of Baptists to address the place of experience after the 'born again' event, a lack of discipline, and the influence others have on an individual's spiritual growth.  At the end of the project a survey was taken that showed Southern Baptists can develop an understanding of spirituality as journey.
