After the Council, a new phenomenon emerged of paid ministerial positions. The US bishops developed a theological framework for this phenomenon and named it lay ecclesial ministry. This project examines the developing theological understanding of lay ecclesial ministry, with focus on the human resource issues that surfaced with the emergence of the role of pastoral associate.
