The project involved a five week study on nuclear war, out of which a proposal was presented to the general board of the congregation that Rush Creek Christian Church become a 'shalom congregation'. This is a national program of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) which involves a congregation committing one year of making the issue of peace the center of their worship, study, and action.  The motion to become a 'shalom congregation' failed. Participants were given an opportunity to visit patient wards and to reflect upon their experience through the peer group process.  Participants were to read three books during the three months. Pastors in six Protestant denominations responded to questionnaires. Children from four Protestant denominations were surveyed. The data is described and analyzed.  Children in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) seem to have less membership identity than children in the Lutheran and Episcopal churches. The author studied the role and qualifications of the office of bishop/presbyter explicated in First Timothy, and in the early vision of the founders of the Stone/Campbell movement. Based on that research, he argues that the role of the elder is to live a life worthy of being imitated and to be capable of articulating the faith embodied by that life.
