Three theological assertions provide the impetus for this project. First, disciple making is the primary responsibility of the church of which evangelism is the initial stage. Discipleship follows a positive response to hearing and understanding the Gospel of Jesus Christ.9 Yet, there can be no hearing unless someone shares the Gospel (Rom. 10:14). Therefore, evangelism is to be a priority for the church. Second, believers, empowered by the Holy Spirit, share their faith. Christians sharing their faith is a direct result of the gratitude and enthusiasm of the Christian life (Acts 1:8). Third, God gives pastors a primary role of equipping the church to engage in its call to evangelism. Gaining clarity on and then dealing with this confusion became the driving impetus for the project. Our leadership team was confused about the definition and conception of discipleship (clarified through a study of Philippians), about divine-human dynamic of discipleship (clarified through an analysis of O'Donovan's Self, world, and time), and about how to overcome impediments and gaps within our individual histories of discipleship (clarified through in-depth interviews concerning discipleship). This project recaptures a biblical view of masculinity. An overview and assessment of the effectiveness of several ministries is given. Men's ministry initiatives of the Presbyterian Church in America are presented with the purpose of developing life-transforming discipleship of men within local churches. Using a qualitative case study method, observations from the wight men were presented in a conversational sequence, and then analyzed for significant themes that were unique to the discipleship experience. The means to spiritual growth were identified, as were the hindrances to spiritual growth. A survey revealed that Top Gun was instrumental in the respondents' lives and made an instant change in their spiritual disciplines and in their relationships with their families, work, and Christian service. Unfortunately, the survey also revealed that many men fall back into old habits through time, thus showing the need for ongoing relationships, discipleship, and accountability. It is primarily a Christian tool using learned experience, Wesleyan theology, and modern interpretation for an endeavor at holistic male ministry.
