patterns for foreign mission work in the churches of Palmetto Presbytery of the PCA.   Questionnaires were sent to all 43 congregations, and all were returned.  Data was also collected from the 1997 PCA Yearbook.  The churches were then ranked, and five each were selected from the top, middle, and bottom third, and their pastors interviewed concerning the missions giving of their congregations. The Book of Jude is used as an example of dealing with Gnosticism's influence on the congregation. Then an historical analysis of Irenaeus's christology in his anti-Gnostic work shows the importance of affirming the deity of the historical Jesus when addressing Gnostic trends. Biblical exegesis demonstrates that baptism, though multivalent, is the rite of entrance into the new community established by the redeeming work of Christ.  An historical survey of the Reformed tradition, giving special attention to the work of John Calvin and the documents of the Westminster Assembly, concludes that the Reformed tradition has held to a highly developed baptismal theology, seeing the sacrament not as a mere symbol but as an instrumental means of grace.  Baptismal theology has, however, become a source of debate and division, often focused on the question of 'baptismal regeneration.'
