Direction includes the identification of a present location, definition of a future destination, and coordinated effort to progress from the former to the latter. Pastoral staff and key ministry leaders will participate in strategic planning for one month to formulate the church’s mission, clarify its vision, and align its values. Traditionally, an organization’s vision represents its future destination alone. In the context of this project, all three elements are aspirational as they define where the church wants to be. The mission statement explains why the church exists, while the vision statement unites the congregation toward a desired future. Core values describe the character of the church. Subsequently, the definition of these elements will enable staff and ministry leaders to evaluate their current practices in ministry. An incident experienced by the author provoked an examination of the tradition of pilgrimage, which identified a biblical tension between the pilgrimage of freedom in the exodus from Egypt and the cultic pilgrimage to the Temple in Jerusalem. This tension was extrapolated into the life of Jesus of Nazareth, through the history of the western church and up to the present. The two archetypes, represented by tent and Temple, were related one to the other in the image of a mobius strip. A theory of the ritual process was described in three aspects: separation, liminality and aggregation. That paradigm was then applied to identify the ritual components of pilgrimage as departure, communitas and arrival. The work of the ritual elder was considered in the two roles of priest and shaman, which accrue to the ritual leader as personal manifestations of the archetypal tension between liberation and bondage. A parallel was thus developed between the biblical paradigms of freedom and cult, the thresholds of separation and aggregation in ritual, the modes of departure and arrival in pilgrimage and the roles of shaman and priest required of the ritual elder. The research method was a grounded theory study which examined the experience of eight pilgrimage directors through the lens of these paradigms. The results elaborated the process of pilgrimage in preparation, arrival and departure as well as practices adopted by guides in naming and bringing forth the spiritual yearning of pilgrims under their guidance. Trust and safety were juxtaposed with surprise and risk. The work of discernment and the place of ritual in pilgrimage were also explored. In group spiritual direction a group leader enables participants to provide spiritual guidance and care for one another. The project coaches group members in using cognitive therapy--a preferred treatment for depressed persons in which change is accomplished through adult learning--to address spiritual needs of the member whose difficulties are the focus of any given session. The project facilitates a model of adult learning, known as Transformative Learning, through practice of reflection. In addition, the author presents a pragmatic application of the theory to crafting sermons which have spiritual direction as the principal aim. The theological/biblical background focused on biblical stories, incarnational presence, personal narrative, human sexuality, prayer, creation-centered spirituality, and process, liberation, and feminist theologies.  As models of spiritual direction the author incorporated the work of Ignatius Loyola, Teresa of Avila, John of the Cross, Studzinski, Gratton, Fischer, and Kelsey. Models of psychotherapy and pastoral counseling included Jung, Rogers, Oden, and Jackson.
