The author proposes that religious truth is always experiential and therefore necessarily participative (tangible), historical/evolutionary (non-eternal), and interpretive (non-intuitive).  Focus on the intuitive, eternal and intangible led Ralph Burhoe to develop a scientific theology, Duncan Howlett a rational-critical theology, and Peter Fleck a spiritually dualistic Christian theology in the early 1980s. Acknowledging Alice Blair Wesley and John Hayward as precursors, the author criticizes the theologies of Burhoe, Howlett, and Fleck in light of hermeneutic principles developed from Gadamer's Truth and Method."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Miscellaneous"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["4f3e9d5f-fc19-4d44-a264-44b56604eb9a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791129209711624192,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:12:04.667Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T00:49:43Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:20:34Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"cb4426c9-5390-4fbf-8b6d-190d24e490e0","accessControl_ssim":["c226c24b-41c8-4a8a-91d4-200e3f7996aa"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Free moral will and human dignity: an analysis of the theologies of Henry N Wieman and Ralph W Burhoe in light of evolutionary theory"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T00:49:42Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:58:36Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["ede5e0e6-bf26-4598-8882-efff8fbf051e"],"hasLease_ssim":["df247694-45f8-4972-bf26-1b9822900f29"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Meadville Lombard Theological School"],"advisor_tesim":["J Ronald Engel"],"year_tesim":["1990"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Richard Speck"],"keyword_tesim":["Unitarian Universalist Association--Doctrine"],"publisher_tesim":["Meadville Lombard Theological School"],"subject_tesim":["Burhoe, Ralph Wendell, 1911-1997","Unitarian Universalist Association","Religion and science","Wieman, Henry Nelson, 1884-1975","Evolution","Christian ethics","Dewey, John, 1859-1952"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["Modern Unitarian Universalism claims that its doctrines are compatible with modern scientific teaching. Free moral will is claimed by liberal religion to be a part of our human dignity.  Modern evolutionary theory poses a serious challenge to this claim.  The place of human moral freedom is called into question.  The problem is to construct an adequate, meaningful doctrine of free moral will which is 'true' within an evolutionary framework.  The theologies of Ralph W Burhoe and Henry N Wieman are reviewed to discover their doctrines of free moral will in light of evolutionary theory.  They are found to be inadequate for liberal religion.  The theology of John Dewey is suggested as promising for further research."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Miscellaneous"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["4f3e9d5f-fc19-4d44-a264-44b56604eb9a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791129747718144000,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:20:37.749Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":3,"label":"Unknown"}],"label":"Resource Type"},{"name":"creator_sim","items":[{"value":"John W Baros-Johnson","hits":1,"label":"John W Baros-Johnson"},{"value":"LeShane, Fred A.","hits":1,"label":"LeShane, Fred A."},{"value":"Richard Speck","hits":1,"label":"Richard Speck"}],"label":"Creator Sim"},{"name":"contributor_sim","items":[],"label":"Contributor"},{"name":"keyword_sim","items":[{"value":"Unitarian Universalist Association--Doctrine","hits":2,"label":"Unitarian Universalist Association--Doctrine"}],"label":"Keyword"},{"name":"subject_sim","items":[{"value":"Unitarian Universalist Association","hits":3,"label":"Unitarian Universalist Association"},{"value":"Burhoe, Ralph Wendell, 1911-1997","hits":2,"label":"Burhoe, Ralph Wendell, 1911-1997"},{"value":"Christian ethics","hits":1,"label":"Christian ethics"},{"value":"Congregations, Unitarian Universalist","hits":1,"label":"Congregations, Unitarian Universalist"},{"value":"Dewey, John, 1859-1952","hits":1,"label":"Dewey, John, 1859-1952"},{"value":"Evolution","hits":1,"label":"Evolution"}],"label":"Subject"},{"name":"location_sim","items":[],"label":"Location"},{"name":"language_sim","items":[{"value":"English","hits":3,"label":"English"}],"label":"Language"},{"name":"publisher_sim","items":[{"value":"Meadville Lombard Theological School","hits":2,"label":"Meadville Lombard Theological School"},{"value":"Florida Center for Theological Studies","hits":1,"label":"Florida Center for Theological Studies"}],"label":"Publisher"},{"name":"date_created_sim","items":[],"label":"Date Created"},{"name":"types_sim","items":[{"value":"Text","hits":3,"label":"Text"}],"label":"Type"},{"name":"year_sim","items":[{"value":"1990","hits":1,"label":"1990"},{"value":"1991","hits":1,"label":"1991"},{"value":"1992","hits":1,"label":"1992"}],"label":"Year"},{"name":"format_sim","items":[],"label":"Format"},{"name":"member_of_collections_ssim","items":[{"value":"Miscellaneous","hits":3,"label":"Miscellaneous"}],"label":"Collections"},{"name":"degree_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":3,"label":"Unknown"}],"label":"Degree"},{"name":"discipline_sim","items":[],"label":"Discipline"},{"name":"degree_granting_institution_sim","items":[{"value":"Meadville Lombard Theological School","hits":2,"label":"Meadville Lombard Theological School"},{"value":"Florida Center for Theological Studies","hits":1,"label":"Florida Center for Theological Studies"}],"label":"Degree Granting Institution"},{"name":"department_sim","items":[],"label":"Department"},{"name":"funder_name_sim","items":[],"label":"Funder Name"},{"name":"event_title_sim","items":[],"label":"Event Title"},{"name":"event_date_sim","items":[],"label":"Event Date"},{"name":"institution_sim","items":[{"value":"Atla RIM","hits":3,"label":"Atla RIM"}],"label":"Host Institution"}],"pages":{"current_page":1,"next_page":null,"prev_page":null,"total_pages":1,"limit_value":10,"offset_value":0,"total_count":3,"first_page?":true,"last_page?":true}}}
