Immediate antecedents were the Anglican religious societies formed during the evangelical revival in England, the Holy Club experience of John Wesley and others in Oxford, and the bands into which Moravians divided their communities. Each is analyzed. The class meeting emerged from the evangelistic organizational activity of Methodists. There is particular reference to the influence of Wesley's main doctrines of repentance, faith and sanctification. Class meetings are compared to the religious societies, the Holy Club, and the Moravian bands, indicating both uniqueness and indebtedness to what was occurring elsewhere. Small group work in the church is effective when it is informed by theology; small groups involve laity in ministry; evangelism is a life-long process in which small groups are important are the conclusions of the study."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Miscellaneous"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["4f3e9d5f-fc19-4d44-a264-44b56604eb9a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791127252206878720,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T06:40:57.845Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T21:24:15Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:04:23Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"ae9f91f8-a6b9-4604-9a48-053080219286","accessControl_ssim":["2bf83ea0-d4f3-4770-a995-1ce9b08a89b8"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["When the bough breaks: a model for pastoral ministry in residential treatment and emergency shelter facilities for children"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T21:24:14Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:10:28Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["4552eb32-2b85-426c-a568-11718fa28dc9"],"hasLease_ssim":["c7c35fe9-d7f2-4314-9368-d730a969dc89"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["United Theological Seminary of the Twin Cities"],"advisor_tesim":["William M Cunningham"],"year_tesim":["1981"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Christin M Lore-Kelly"],"publisher_tesim":["United Theological Seminary of the Twin Cities"],"subject_tesim":["Children--Institutional care","Children--Religious life","Pastoral theology"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The author proposes that pastoral ministry will be effective if it is institutionally integrated by recognizing people's need to find value in being, by helping them experience faith in life's ultimate meaning and by providing unconditional care. Examining this relationship in an historical-analytical manner, the writer has tried to show that there is no real conflict between the fraternity and organized religion. The author defines non-sectarian religion using sociological, anthropological and religious works. He gives a brief historical presentation of the fraternity in England and in the United States and explains the institution as it exists in the US. He treats Freemasonry and Protestantism from the standpoint of both the antipathy and the tacit approval of the fraternity among various Protestant groups, concluding that, for mainline Protestantism, there exists a harmonious ambivalence in the relationship. He also deals with Freemasonry relations with Roman Catholicism, Judaism, and the black community. He shows how the principal arguments and objections of religious groups against the fraternity are without foundation since the majority of the arguments are based upon the misconception of Freemasonry as a religion--which it is not--rather than as a fraternity--which it is."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Miscellaneous"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["4f3e9d5f-fc19-4d44-a264-44b56604eb9a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799718009338593280,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T02:27:22.279Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T21:24:14Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:30:49Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"e07143ef-7408-479f-8488-bef26cf114c6","accessControl_ssim":["f2261b69-cd68-447c-ba01-86883a35e3d7"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Recognizing resistance in supervision: a course for parish pastors"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T21:24:13Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:33:36Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["9e8d1fa9-7293-4a71-8437-1efcae5d833e"],"hasLease_ssim":["f896fe9e-1d23-4ea8-b32b-40b54f586384"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Robert C Schultz"],"year_tesim":["1982"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["J Luther Mauney"],"publisher_tesim":["Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Clinical pastoral education","Clergy","Laity","Supervision"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The thesis is that pastoral supervision skills and role for parish clergy in supervising laity can be taught in a brief course. The theoretical work of Ivan Boszormenyi-Nagy concerning dialectic, loyalty and justice is evaluated and criticized. He studies the family system from an existential perspective and integrates obligations to and responsibility for intergenerational loyalty commitments. Case presentations are used to show how one pastoral therapist used IFTT from a Christian perspective. Recognizing loyalty as the backbone of a family system, the pastoral counselor defines a family's understanding of loyalty obligations and constructs a framework which encourages psychological, emotional, and spiritual loyalty commitments to surface and be integrated in a healthy, relational context. Understanding justice can help a pastoral counselor pray for a family's unresolved injustices. Forgiveness and reconciliation can work toward reciprocal accountability and responsibility to guide family growth and health."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Miscellaneous"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["4f3e9d5f-fc19-4d44-a264-44b56604eb9a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791128969096986624,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:08:15.199Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T21:23:15Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:33:58Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"e6f569dc-088c-4035-8f96-cdcb230a2f35","accessControl_ssim":["8241d43e-9ce9-434c-b5b0-379f5a1bd62c"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Premarital counseling for remarriage in the Episcopal Church"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T21:23:14Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:44:19Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["807a8e7c-249e-401c-8578-ca55920e53bf"],"hasLease_ssim":["bb466e9b-e6bc-4fe2-9854-e2a6af23b90a"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School"],"advisor_tesim":["Robert J Page"],"year_tesim":["1982"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Jeffrey M Kirk"],"publisher_tesim":["Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School"],"subject_tesim":["Marriage--Religious aspects--Christianity--Anglican Communion","Remarriage","Marriage counseling"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["Premarital counseling of divorced persons who plan to remarry poses unique pastoral challenges for clergy of the Episcopal Church due to the inherent complexity that often accompanies remarriage and the requirement that a bishop approve. This project addresses these challenges by proposing a three-to-four session model of premarital counseling. The model was designed over seven years of parish ministry. Twenty-three clergy in seven dioceses were questioned concerning methods of premarital counseling and the need for a model. The model also incorporates findings from a survey of literature on: dealing with marriage, divorce and remarriage; the experiences of separation, divorce and remarriage, and reconstituting families; premarital counseling; and Episcopal canon law on holy matrimony. While the model has not been tested in an experimental design, it has proven useful to me and should be useful to other clergy."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Miscellaneous"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["4f3e9d5f-fc19-4d44-a264-44b56604eb9a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130591402393600,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:34:02.350Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T21:23:15Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:29:00Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"dd247e0e-c73e-438a-a60b-dffbe899fd8f","accessControl_ssim":["6dabb0e9-073c-4baa-b778-65ec6c70524e"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Education-counseling for remarriage of divorced persons"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T21:23:14Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:27:38Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["b1edaf71-7b76-48f6-84dc-57ce60df30e9"],"hasLease_ssim":["07c52642-5132-4244-9c94-1201f2e61faf"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Luther Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Roland D Martinson"],"year_tesim":["1982"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Bertha Katschke-Jennings"],"publisher_tesim":["Luther Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Church and social problems","Evangelicalism","Remarriage","Marriage counseling"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This thesis contends that the evangelical faith contains elements that support the remarriage of divorced persons. It presents the need and theological foundations for such a ministry. Questionnaires and interviews were used to gather data from clergy, remarrieds and about to be remarrieds. Study of literature and audio resources on remarriage were also pursued. Seminars can be designed to help prepare couples for remarriage. The study discusses design, implementation and evaluation of a 'planning on remarriage' seminar and addresses barriers for doing so in a conservative evangelical setting.
