The image format was used by the seminarians and staff (20-25 volunteers) over a period of twelve weeks. It included: relaxation procedures, music, biblical imagery, icons, and film. The non-image prayer begins with an introductory workshop on Centering Prayer for a group who practiced this prayer for three months and attended a follow-up workshop. A 'participant-observer' field method is used through the course of the study. A four-fold analysis (contextual, mechanical, organic, and symbolic) of a congregation's subculture aids the preacher in the work of ethnography.  The symbolic analysis is expanded to include seven congregational symbols readily accessible to the preacher.  The study utilizes story in reporting the findings that detail the congregation's unique world view, values, and ethos.  The study then explores the role of ethnography in sermon preparation and the preaching moment.  Members of the congregation participated in a parish project group to prepare and evaluate sermons.  Interventions were based on feedback from the project group, a congregational survey, and the effect of preaching on the congregation's vision for future ministries. I began this research project confident that Christianity is a faith tradition that supports and fosters hope and wholeness among people. Using the theoretical foundations of adult religious educators and the insights of Christian feminist liberation theologians, I facilitated a spirituality gathering of women at Our Place, Community of Hope. I chose to use Christian feminist theologians because these women have influenced my life profoundly, nurturing my hope and giving me courage to own my place in church and society. My greatest desire for the women who gathered together was that they develop a deepening sense of hope as they learn of a God who loves them unconditionally. In my research I wanted to learn about the experience of hope in women who participated in the gatherings as well as to determine if their hope was nurtured by these gatherings. To do this I used the question: How does adult education nurture hope among women at Our Place. The topic is explored through the researcher's experience and theology and the theological tradition of the church, specifically the United Church of Canada, and using a qualitative research methodology. The specifics of the process involve a preacher basing his sermons on the Old Testament Lectionary texts for four weeks of the Epiphany season. Both the preacher and the congregation then reflect, through written and verbal responses, on the experience. The researcher's assumption prior to the thesis work was that the Old Testament is not being preached often or well enough in the United Church of Canada, and the data collected validates the assumption.
