The author carried out the project in the worship of Downtown Christian Church during the Sundays of Advent creating a liturgical form of worship related to advent themes, using also banners, paraments, and a preacher's robe. Specifically, the dissertation pursues the question: what benefits, possibilities, barriers, and limitations need to be considered for interdisciplinary ministry collaboration to be fostered between faith community (parish) nurses and faith group leaders in promoting a renewal of both faith and health in times of transition?  Data was gathered over five years. This project set forth an effective pastoral couseling method to address and decrease depressive symptoms. African-American women's spirituality, and Womanist theology provided the framework for this process.  Biblical stories and cognitive/behavioral techniques, integrated with intentionally 'joining' the client, informed the pastoral counseling sessions. Research involved Aaron Beck's Depression inventory as a pre- and post-indicator of depressive symptoms, with five women participating in ifive counseling sessions. Six case studies were done. The research showed that the interventions reduced or alleviated pain and deeply relaxed the patient in 100% of the patients studied. They assisted emotionally by reducing or alleviating fear, hurts, anxiety, and sadness. They aided the patients spiritually by enhancing or renewing their relationship with God and by helping them to deal with their disease. The situation reflected across the church is that clergy and vestries are not always prepared and equipped to plan and set goals with confidence that they are acting consistently with what they believe God is calling the congregation to be and to do.  In response to this perceived need, I have developed a design that is structured to encourage and enable discernment and planning by congregations.  This project has been advanced by the knowledge that many among the clergy and congregations in our diocese clearly recognize the importance of scheduling time apart from regular daily demands in order to listen for the voice of the Lord through a structured process as they plan for the future. Theological concepts that God speaks to his people, leading and guiding them, undergirded this project.  Biblical references substantiating that the Lord speaks to his people were incorporated throughout the process.  Psychological concepts that informed the thesis included the awareness and application of systems theory as presented by Dr. Edwin Friedman and the Rev. Peter L. Steinke.  This theory was particularly helpful in recognizing behavior associated with the prospect of change and the anticipated increase in anxiety.
