It assumes that healthy churches in urban Africa are both theologically and contextually reflective.  The project opens laying biblical foundations from Hebrew 12:23.  Contextual factors are then presented: urbanization, Maputo's history, globalization in Maputo, cultural contours, and a community analysis of one urban neighborhood.  Six contextual theology/ministry attempts are analyzed.  Fifteen theological institutions are summarized and the results of a survey of church planters are then presented. The researcher's project serves as a guide to awaken highly dysfunctional and dying churches--through a theological revisioning--to the mission of God within a culture where the Church is increasingly marginalized.  To test the effectiveness of the researcher's project, two churches were selected as case studies. The study was conducted among 35 priests and 65 non-clergy who congregate within 16 parishes of the diocese. Focus is laid on key factors leading to the actual movement of congregants from one church to another. Each of these factors is analyzed to show its impact on congregations' response to keeping within the fellowship(s). Men's ministry initiatives of the Presbyterian Church in America are presented with the purpose of developing life-transforming discipleship of men within local churches. This project asserts that congregationalism without a plurality of elders is unbiblical and unhealthy. It shows that over time the Southern Baptist Convention removed a plurality of elders from its congregational polity and replaced them with a democratic process. The research shows revived interest in a plurality of elders among Southern Baptists. Chapter one describes the post-Vatican II Catholic identity controversy. Chapter two explores the inclusive spirit of Vatican II as the theological foundation for this model of ministry. Chapter three describes the learning design incorporating five Catholic identity themes that enable inclusive exploration of Catholic identity. Chapter four discusses the results of an evaluation experience in which participants sampled activities from the curriculum. Chapter five identifies recommendations for further development. The sooner students become involved in reading the Hebrew Bible, and the more successful they are, the more important Hebrew study will be to them.
