In this dissertation the author surveyed and interviewed missionaries to determine what spiritual disciplines most helped them stay effective in their ministry. The results of this research point out certain spiritual disciplines which missionaries use to remain spiritually healthy-prayer, engaging Scripture, worship, fellowship, and service.  Other disciplines were done to a lesser extent.  There was also recognition by the missionaries that workload, busyness, one's environment, and cross-cultural living impacted the effective practice of those disciplines. These relationships incorporate mentors who are both military professionals and mentors who are religious leaders of integrity. Using a mixed methods approach to descriptive research, the author researched biblical and historical methods of discipleship, ministerial formation, modern research in mentoring, and surveyed chaplains about personal experiences with mentors during their early military careers. I first explore the biblical and systematic theology of Christlike maturity. Next, I describe a series of interviews in which the three most common emerging themes affecting spiritual growth among graduate students were: limited time, the need for community, and spiritual growth through crises. Sixty Chinese scholars who have become Christians since coming to North America were surveyed.  The author examined the qualitative research, analyzed the answers and observed and organized answers most given. Christians caring and sharing their lives was the top factor that encouraged belief and bad behavior of Christians was the top factor impeding belief. Through a series of interviews and surveys, Presbyterian pastors in western Pennsylvania were studied to consider their attitudes toward and use of the biblical languages in preparing to preach. A study of scripture is undertaken to ascertain scripture's view of scripture and the relevance of this for the use of the biblical languages in preaching. The Reformation is considered as the most relevant period in theological history.
