Interviews, sermon analysis and questionnaires were used in seven different congregations at eight preaching events to assess listener response.  For the five preachers in this study, those whose views of the Bible more closely matched their listeners' views used less story, while those whose views vary more from their listeners' views used more story. The author used four distinct spiritual types articulated by Corinne Ware as a taxonomy of spiritual types found in the church.  She preached four sermons using the same lectionary text, each directed toward a particular spiritual type.  She also preached two blended sermons that spoke to all four types simultaneously. The theological basis for preaching and communication within the congregation are defined. All good communication requires feedback. Three models of congregational feedback and critique were created: listening group, Sunday worshippers and adult education classes. A model for feedback from peers is also explored. The most important elements of preaching are defined by each group and contrasted with Baylor University's definition of effective preaching. It is revealed how much more concrete and practical congregations define preaching than does Baylor. The reluctance to receive feedback and obstacles to enhancing Lutheran preaching are explored. The author drafted this policy on the basis of research in the theology of Sabbath rest, clergy burnout, adult learning styles, and missional ecclesiology. The author hypothesized that clergy and lay leaders in congregations can embrace ways of thinking about ministerial sabbaticals that are theologically grounded, missionally driven and sensitive to the context for ministry. The author tested and sustained this hypothesis by conducting interviews with twenty clergy and twenty lay leaders, all of whom had already reviewed a first draft of the sabbatical policy. The project included surveys to members, new members and members that seldom participate to discover how they experience the caring ministry of the congregation.  The results disclosed a need to be more intentional in building community.  Leaders are encouraged to engage members and visitors in conversation.  New events were held that focused on relationship building. Leaders are deepening their relationships through the use of check-in questions at regular meetings.  All members are encouraged to be a welcoming presence. Presents an interfaith model for how the teachings and practices of the Buddhist traditions might be utilized by Christians in their own spiritual development. This model is based on a 'Spiritual Formation Guidebook' designed around the framework of the Buddhist Noble Eightfold Path and including corresponding Christian insights. A sampling of laity, clergy, and seminary professors used the guidebook for one month and then provided their overwhelmingly positive evaluations. Using the case study of a local church in an identity crisis and its gay ministers, this project utilizes interviews, sermons, small group discussions, conversations with church members, and surveys to formulate a lesbian and gay homiletic.
