A small group of eight adult members were recruited from a rural United Methodist Church in Okemah, Oklahoma.  For eleven weeks they met with the pastor weekly for a Bible study experience that applied principles and techniques from neuropsychology and neurolinguistic programing. This project examined six stories of the Bible, exegetically with the intent of preaching the stories narratively.  The practicum was conducted over a six week period evaluated by seven laypersons. There were two other groups of lay persons that either studied on their own, or did not study at all.  The study extended over an eight week period in an effort to determine how well persons who participated in the groups, who also contributed to the sermon preparation, understood the message and text that was used as the basis for the sermon. The assumption that underlies the project is that if teachers can experience intersection between personal story, personal experience, the biblical story, and faith community experience, to tell one will be to tell the other.  As a result, the Bible will become biographical, which makes it easier to communicate.  Teaching then will be discernibly different in the church education experience.  The project was a six-week teacher education experience for mid-high teachers that utilized denominational materials as the primary resource. The author taught Survey of the Old Testament at East Texas State University in the fall of 1985.  The course design included an understanding of the Old Testament as a canon of liberation and the teaching model focused on the development of a dialogical relationship between the students and the material. Members of the congregation were involved in disciplined study and living for an eleven week period.  The theological issues were: 1) the nature of the church as redemptive community; 2) Scripture as an authority for theology; 3) dangers of legalism moderated within a gospel of grace; 4) the quality of life within the small group; and 5) the difficulties of pluralism within a small group. The thesis was supported when the writer led a Bible study in a congregation previously unknown to him and he to them.
