Using focus groups and theological reflection, the project explores these connections while using Matthew's boat stories to illustrate characteristics of engaged ministry. The project tested that in making these connections, a congregation became more aware of the stories of the 'other' by connecting with the stories of people, enabling a willingness to become more involved with engaged ministry. The premise is that empathy, as presented by the psychoanalytic school of self-psychology is a caring and compassionate way for a pastor to be in relationship with his or her ministry setting and models the essence of the gospel message. The project sought to test the relationship between accountability groups devoted to the practice of classical spiritual disciplines and the development of a supportive community within the group.  It sought to determine the relationship between involvement within the group and involvement in the church at large. Methodology included the formation of two groups and testing of ministry involvement before and after the experience.  Results were mixed regarding the relationship between group involvement and leadership development. Based on the love commandment, this project outlines a four-part workshop presented to the First Christian Church in Pawhuska, Oklahoma. Methodology entailed instruction, preparation for specific visits, with feedback and discussion to reflect on effectiveness of calls made and-or need for further istruction. The focus was on initiating dialogue to hear another's story rather than necessarily telling one's own.  The report addresses with both systematic and pastoral theology hermeneutics, faith development and evangelism. Methodology includes dialogical skills; faith-journey story-telling; introductions to developmental theories; and written asignments.
