The author used ethnographic research methods.  This included  surveys of clergy and taped responses of laity. There were eight lay persons and seven clergy that took part in this study.  The author used to text in the gospel of Mark. We examined Mark 1:9-20 and Mark 16: 1-8.I listened to the responses of laity and the clergy.  I then analysed each response.   After the author reflected on the laity responses.  I then preached both texts in two small contexts, the church and the mission in which I work.The author's conclusion is that people hear many different messages from the same text. Mark Allan Powell writes in his book, What  shall they Hear? that 'in the moment of hearing a the text preached and read the listener has the power to choose what to do with our words.' The central question was, 'How does one recapture the punch of the parables in a modern setting, when the points of references are unfamiliar to today's audiences?' The project focussed on the reactions and evaluation of a select group of people from the congregation who heard two different methods of preaching on select parables.  One method incorporated the homiletical suggestions of David Buttrick;  the other method was a retelling of the parable in a modern setting. In addition there is a lack of understanding of the 'essential tenets' of Reformed theology.  Through preaching and teaching, this project attempts to educate the congregation of Trinity United Presbyterian Church in Clarksburg, Pennsylvania about the Book of Confessions and the Reformed tradition. Fourteen sermons are preached, based on the sections of the Heidelberg Catechism that deal with the Apostles' Creed.  A thirteen-session class on the Book of Confessions is held. The particular genre is expository preaching.  The student's personal faith journey, theological views of Scripture and the embrace of expository preaching in discipleship development are highlighted.  The doctoral paper provides a description of the context within which the project was developed, and the motivations that led to the founding of the congregation.  The student implemented this strategy through a series of expository sermons followed by a focus group to reflect, respond, interact and evaluate relevance, contents, form and outcome.
