The biblical reference for the project came from Jeremiah 36.  The participants in the program were lay persons from St Luke's Episcopal Church, Mobile, Alabama.  They committed themselves to read selected passages from Holy Scripture, to reflect upon the same through contemplation and to write journal entries related to the experience.  Two questionnaires provided empirical data on the project, which lasted 30 days. A complex statistical study involving the chi square was used to determine the accuracy of the thesis.  A testing procedure employing the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory and the Spiritual Orientation Profile was administered to 100 lay people and 100 clergy persons and the personalities and prayer lives were examined. Fifteen pastors and twenty-eight parishioners were interviewed concerning pastoral visitation.  There are biblical and historical reasons for the pastor to visit parishioners to share the Christian faith and to give spiritual guidance.  The majority of the pastors interviewed visit in hospitals and homes where there is illness or crisis, but not routinely all parishioners.  Parishioners want this pastor to visit them regularly, but by appointment.  They want the visit to be social.
